I have just migrated to orange for there free 8mb service

and have now been met with you can only recieve 2mb with us

we need to have our own LLU equipment installed in your exchange for you to recieve 8MB from us, BT can probably offer you that as they have there own LLU equipment installed and we don't.

Now does every ISP have to have there own LLU *equipment* installed at the exchange or is he talking cobbles ?

Anyway who do i go with ?
I have just left pipex after 2 months of trying to get broadband at 8MB and failing miserably (due to staff being completely useless).

You don't stand a chance with Orange LLU unless they have their own LLU equipment installed in your exchange — that's the whole point of LLU initiatives.

It looks like your only option if you want 8Mbps is to go through BT...

P.S. May I ask how PIPEX failed to provide you with 8Mbps due to their staff being "completely useless?" What did they provide you with, baring in mind that these services are up to 8Mbps?

Ok i had until last night a 2mb service with pipex which i was trying to upgrade to 8mb.

after 2 months they still hadnt sorted it out.
the first time *** order was put through it failed due to an incorrect number being put on as my adsl line number (no idea where it cam from its certianly no relation to any phone number i know of)
Ok then no one rang me to tell me after a couple of weeks nothing had happened so i rang them to ask them why and find out the above.
straighten that up give them the correct numbers etc.

keep ringing (everytime the phone call being on hold form anywhere between 20 -40 mins) and dont get any information out of them endless conversations going round in circles.
finally find out that they still hadnt changed this number that was wrong on the system at which point i lost it and told them to cancel the service i had had enough of them.

Can i not use anyone except BT as they cap all there packages :(
there is a checker on pipex website that says i can recieve up to 5.5mbps so i assumed i could get it from them which makes me think there must be others as well.

any way to find out who has LLU in my exchange ?

I assume the PIPEX checker means that you can get up to 5.5Mbps (bare in mind this is just an estimate) using this new umfangled MaxDSL (or whatever the kids call it these days) service provided by BT. You can get MaxDSL through any number of ISPs (including PIPEX), although you'll be hard-pushed to find an ISP with no usage limits — even PIPEX have a FUP you have to abide by.

Check out Samknows to see what LLU services are available in your area.

Edit: The sticky has a veritable smorgasbord of information about MaxDSL, LLU and suchforth

Bear in mind some (or all) of the Max information in the sticky is obsolete, but you don't have to use BT Broadband to be using a BT Wholesale service - your Pipex service "used BT" (though they don't have LLU kit as the Orange bod told you).

No - you can get MaxDSL (up to 8MBit) with any BB provider who uses BT's network. You don't have to use BT Broadband - just so long as the company you use, works off the BT network and equipment. i.e. Pipex, Nildram, Zen, Entanet etc all use BT's network but provide the service to you (through special agreements with BT Wholesale).

The confusion seems to lay in the fact that BT Wholesale (people who run the networks and Telephone exchanges and own all the equipment) is different from BT Retail (people who lease from BT Wholesale and provide services like any other BB provider e.g. Pipex).

Hope this helps.

Analogy: Think the railways. Network Rail (is it?) own the tracks, but Virgin and others run trains on the tracks. BT Wholesale is like Network Rail - they own the track, but lease it to companies who use their network.

Be glad that you're unable to get the orange LLU service, it sucks!! lol

However Orange have started releasing IPStream Max to customers now, and apparently will be upgrading people to this from November onwards.

I'm not in work this weekend so don't know any more info right now.

Pretty much all BB providers lease from BT - the only exception to this are LLU companies. These include Be*, Orange LLU, Pipex LLU, Bulldog LLU, [NTL, Telewest - own cable network] and any others listed on SamKnows. But some of these also offer normal Broadband lines. One way to know - LLU is pretty much always ADSL2 i.e. 24Mbps or 16Mbps. If the package is called Max something or other, and is only 8Mbits, then it will be a normal package which you can buy.

Just go to a website and use their checker to see.

Demon are fine (or used to be very good) but I have no idea now.
