hello all
yesterday afternoon i cleaned the 3 dust filters on the front panel of my 1200.
since then i have left the side panel off, which got me thinking.........

if i where to get 6 120mm case fans and modify my side panel, what would the the best method to power them ?

i come abit stuck when i comes to connectors and powering stuff, so any help here pls
 
fantastic, so that item i just plug into 1 spare molex and the fans into other connectors and away they go ?
 
As long as you have a 4 pin fan header to use, sure. Otherwise you can splice the cables together / use *thinks* 5 Y splitters to join them all together. I'd run that off a molex though, your fan header might not like driving 6 fans.

The best choice is probably to wire all the fans together with solder / multiple Y adapters then run a 30cm cable from the mass of adapters to the motherboard. Then when you take the side off you can easily unplug it
 
Broken link I'm afraid. Assuming it's this, then you plug it into a molex and into a 4 pin fan header, either the cpu header or a different one, and plug up to *three* fans into it. It will then run all *three* fans excellently at no risk to the motherboard, but it does need to plug into a four pin fan header

It's possible (fairly likely) that you can use three of these, two plugged into another one to run 7 fans. However again the fans have to be four pin, not three pin for this to work

If you just want to run it off the molex on the psu, you want one of these to change the molex into a 3 pin socket, the 3 pin plug goes to the motherboard to report rpm. So now you have a 3 pin socket available, you can use five of these to connect the six fans to this socket.

if you like, you can move a couple of pins around on the molex to run all 6 at 7V instead of at 12. The reason combining the cables and soldering appeals is that the 5x£2.30 is probably more than a soldering iron anyway, and rather less tidy

With the pwm splitter cable you can run three 4 pin pwm fans, the power comes direct from the psu via molex, the smaller 4 pin pwm connector goes to the cpu header to provide pwm signal to the 3 fans, the beauty of it is that no power is drawn through the cpu header.
 
the connector is plug into the mobo....is that a 3 pin ? i know you said 4 but my mobo uses 3 pins

please excuse my sheer lack of understanding with this sort of thing
 
This means the fan header you're looking at will not work with the 4 pin pwm splitter I'm afraid. Or at least, if it does work, it'll run the fans at full speed all the time. I believe the cpu fan header on your board will be 4 pin, but it is probably preoccupied with the ac freezer pro.

thats correct, just looked now i have a 3 pins pwm and 2 spare 3 pin chassis pins in mobo
cpu has the freezer on it.
no this will not work ?
 
Yep on your motherboard the cpu fan connector is a 4 pin (your board is similair to mine) the adapter plugs into this, then the larger molex connector goes to the psu, you then connect upto 3 4 pin pwm fans to the 3 connectors on the adapter, i have mine setup with 2 fans on my cpu cooler and 1 as a rear exhaust.
 
3 pins means not pwm, 4 pins are needed for pwm. You can use the adapter to run the cpu fan and two others from the cpu header, as long as the other two fans are four pin and not three.

@setter, the OP is aiming to run 6 fans, do you know if anyone got around to finding out if the akasa pwm splitters could be daisy chained?


Yeah, soldering iron or five Y splitters :)
