Antec BTX case

hate to bump but just wondered if anyone knows if there are any plans to repace ATX as the major form factor

im debating whether or not to upgrade my system or wait til vista comes out and do it then. don't really want to get an obsolete system which im not gonna even use all summer.

also, will mATX boards fit in any ATX case?

mATX boards will fit in ATX, its in the sticky. :)

ATX 2.0/2.2 will be with us for a while yet, no successors are even out yet so a good few years left in the old girl yet. :)

BTX is a old and out-dated standard now.

That's true. It's a standard that never took off with 3rd party case makers which makes it outdated, but some of the big tier1 system manufacturers use it quite effectively and it allows them to use just 1 fan to intake air at the front blow it over the cpu heatsink and then duct it out the back. Take a look at the Dimension 9150. Basically when implemented correctly you can run really powerful hardware in a silent system, with just 1 or maybe 2 fans. The same thing is probably achievable in an atx form factor but is usually more noisy.

Yeh I totally agree, but a really high end rig like most would build in the off the shelf BTX cases they are not up to the job usually, at least not the ones I have seen.

Same here. Except one. I have a few pc's under my desk right now. One is a Dell Dimension 9150. This is a btx case and while not real high end....is running a brand new Pentium D 960 (3.6 gig dual core conroe), 4gigs DDR2, 2x500gig Hitachi drives, 2 opticals, Xi-Fi, Tvtuner, and a 7900gtx. The thing is really quiet. 1 92mm fan at the bottom of the case to cool the hdd area..makes only a slight buzzing if you put your ear to the front of the case, and a very quiet 120mm fan just above it....This draws air in through a front grille, and blows it over the cpu heatsink, which is actually mounted on the front of the case, and hot air then passively exits out the back of the case which is largely done in a sort honeycombed grille style. Not sure what the cpu temps are, but the gpu is overclocked to 700/1880 and idles at 37 degrees. Part of this is to do with the fact the btx design allows for the airflow from the front 120mm fan to pass over the cpu and the gpu. Personally I think it's an excellent design and wish 3rd party case makers copied it. Everything is pretty standard in this case...mobo, psu, and it's completely and I mean completely toolless.
