Antec Formula 5 - How long till it kicks in?

I recently built a computer for the first time, and found my E6300 temps were averaging around 52 degrees. I'm using the Intel stock cooler. After a bit of cable management and the addition of an extra exhaust fan i got these temps down to 40-41 average.

Even though I was happy, I thought replacing the stock thermal compound with something a tad better wouldn't hurt. I went down to my local computer shop and came out with some Antec Formula 5 Silver Thermal Compound.

So, I've applied this new thermal compound, and now my temps are 54-55. From reading previous posts here on a similar subject, I understand it takes a certain amount of time for the compound to kick in. How long is this normally, and even so, should my temps have risen back up by so much?

If you put too much on, it causes temperatures to rise. A small blob in the middle of the heat spreader is all that is required.

the stuff most of us use is Artic Silver 5. Not Antec.

Not sure what you shoudl sxpect from it, and also, how much did you apply?

I've only used a small amount, but thanks for replying.

Ok.... idle temps have gone back to 40-41 now (I'm using Coretemp and Everest btw). Maybe the stuff just needed a while to kick in

Edit: Yeah I would have used AS5 preferably, but the shop only stocked this other stuff and I'm going away for a few weeks tonight. My lack of patience forced me to see if it'd affect my temps before I went.

Once I get back I might even replace it with some AS5, but I'm happy to leave it at these temps as it's caused me no problems so far.
