A few weeks back I was fortunate enough to be selected by our local Antec Rep. Ace Modder to take one of the new HCP 1000w units out for a spin (and a little torture tbh :p)

Packaging & whats in the box!!

Not a great deal to talk about on this part, as we've come to expect from Antec, the packaging internally and externally is perfect, simplistic and organised. Contents consist of the PSU its self, big ol' bag of cables and the warranty information leaflets.

Some sticky pads to protect contact faces of the unit when installed:

Warranty information, 7 years, zero hassle and of course with Ace Modder about to help if required ;)

HCP 1000

The build quality of the unit and cables is magnificent, it has a real solid weight to it and its relatively short compared to other 1000+ PSU's. The cables are all braided, with black wire terminations as not to stand out, I actually completely removed my braided extensions as the provided cables just look so nice :)

Fortunately this unit is replacing my Leadex 1000W Plat, so have something to directly compare it against!

As you can see, all of the 4 rails are clearly marked and ensures the connectors are split evenly to avoid triggering OCP (more on that later) over a single rail.

DSCN0178.JPG

Some serious amount of power in those 4 rails, very hard to get a focused pic of also!!

DSCN0183.JPG

The comparisons, if you hold the HCP 1000 in one hand and the Leadex 1000 in the other you can instantly feel the difference, the HCP is heavier, sturdier with an all round more polished feel. Nothing on it at all feels cheap, the same can't be said of the Leadex.

HCP is around 1/2" shorter

The Cables!

The usual assortment of cables we'd expect of a 1000w Platinum rated PSU, plenty of PCIE, Molex, SATA as well as the standard 20+4 pin and EPS connectors. As I mentioned earlier, the build quality of the cables is outstanding, again I have something to compare them against in the Leadex. The superflower cables were overly chunky (especially the 20+4) and damn near impossible to manipulate. I can't say the same about Antecs cables, easy to manipulate, well bundled and packed down to avoid them being too thick!

Firstly I fished out all of the PCIE cables, first thought was 'what the hell Antec, only 3 cables???' until i realised one of the cables is a 16 pin connector on the PSU side giving a pair of 8p PCIE cables at the other end, this is great and should be used as the primary PCIE cable, if running one GPU, essentially you'd only need to be running one cable from the PSU to power it without worrying about daisy chains.

CPU and motherboard power cables...

Big ol' pile of molex, SATA and I even think theres a floppy power connector in there somewhere too!

OC LINK!!

OC Link is something new to Antec PSU's, specifically the new Antec HCP series (850, 1000 & 1300). In a nut shell it makes running multiple PSU's incredibly easy to set up. Previously one would have to fiddle about with 24 pin splitters to trick the slave PSU into booting, it wasn't ideal, now, with OC Link, connect the small 2 pin cable between a pair of Antec HCP Platinum PSU's and you're set! Essentially if I were to grab an Antec HCP-850 Plat and want to use it in my system, I'd just connect the cable in the pics and just like that I'd have 1850w of platinum power to play with!

Test & Torture!!

I've been living with the HCP-1000 Plat for a few weeks now and can't find a single fault - and trust me I've tried, I can't make it loud, I can't make it hot, I can't force OCP.

Test system & Voltages:

4770K @ 5.0GHZ 1.4v 300w/300A of headroom in bios
16GB Kingston HyperX Beast @ 2400 10-11-11-32-1T 1.75v
MSI Z97 Xpower AC (PLX)
2 x Gainward Phantom GLH GTX780, 1375/7200, 450w bios
2 x D5 Pumps @ 12v
3 x OCZ 256GB SSD's
1 x Samsung 1TB mechanical drive
14 x Akasa Apache 120mm fans.

Now, 14 fans all running thats all I hear...but I have them on a controller, so disabled all of them to see if I could hear the PSU...I couldn't, the only thing I could hear was the low pitch whurr from my mechanical drive. Fired some heavy load through it, still nothing. At this point I checked to see if the fan was actually spinning - it was its just incredibly quiet. It reminds me a little of the Antec True-Quiet fans I used a few builds ago.

Load and OCP...For load testing I used a watt meter, which is currently being replaced as I broke it before I could take a picture :( Anyhow I ran a series of intensive tasks, mostly 3dmark 11, firestrikeX and Heaven. Peak power draw was around 1100w iirc, the PSU barely flinched. One of the key features which often gets overlooked is Antecs OCP system, fat single rail units don't have OCP, which leaves you at risk of damaging other components in your system. I knew I was safe and within the limits of the PSU to over-volt this far, if anything was going to go wrong I had OCP protection :)

To read more on Antecs OCP system and how you could be a risk with a single rail have a read here: http://www.antec.com/Believe_it/PSU/

Final Thoughts

This unit is absolutely fantastic and worth every penny its on sale for. Build quality is second to none and performance can't be beaten, just do the math for each rail...

Pros:
-Build Quality
-Solid Performer
-OCP Protected Quad-Rail set up
-OC Link
-Silent

Cons:

I honestly can't think of anything, some may put price in here vs other units on the market, but this thing is a step above them in every department.

Ive just looked at the review nicely done, but since OC are selling the 1000w super flower platinum a lot cheaper (149.99 this week only),I don't see why I would choose this over it unless there is something im missing?

Its main advantages over the SF is build quality, noise and more protection - the antec link in the review makes some good points about the importance of a strong multi rail ocp protected unit vs an unprotected single rail. Don't get me wrong the SF plat is a lovely bit of kit and a good price :)

Worth mentioning the HCP 1300 Platinum is on this week only at £199 - now that is a steal!

Out of interest why are you replacing your leadex PSU? Problems with it?

Leadex Superflower and Antec PSUs are on my short list for the next time I build/upgrade. Good review on the Antec though. Really like the OC Link feature.

Leadex got replaced with this as I (and whyscotty) was chosen by ace modder to do some hands on testing vs comparable units.

I'm getting another watt meter this week so I should have some figures in that respect also.

Which ever way you look at it, Antec and superflower are setting the benchmark when it comes to performance PSU's. Nothing else is or should be getting a look in.
