WARNING: If you are a watercooler fan, do not read this thread, you will probably hate me
So, the plan -
Now yes, I know in the rules there is 'No H60/H70' but this is a little different so I thought I'd be fine ;P
A word of warning: I recently flashed my Desire HD with ICS and was warned of camera issues, I didn't notice anything wrong until just now, so sorry for the random tearing and issues at the top, also for the general poor quality of some
The Bracket
So, firstly I took my GTX480 apart and measured all the wholes with some callipers, after doing this I made an illustrator file that would allow it to be cut via laser cutter (I would like to also mention, after going through all this effort I found that there was already a place that had exactly this uploaded to their site)
After waiting a week for it to be cut, I spray painted it and here it is -
The Kulér
So finally after I got my bracket I got my Kuhler
I took both the Intel and AMD brackets out and decided I didn't want the AMD as I'm running Intel, so if I ever wanted to mount to my CPU I'd have my Intel one spare (Sorry AMD fans!)
These arms need to be cut off in order for the mod to happen -
After doing that I need to epoxy them together (Preferably high temp, as you know the GTX480 likes to get a tad toasty
So after gluing the two together you're left with this -
As you can see the glue was rather strong and didn't want to let go of the cardboard box I left it on
After this I took apart my trusty old GTX480 and this is what I was with -
Once fitted it was looking much much different
Now, I've read the small amount of people who have done this say about what about your VRAM getting hot and your caps, well, as all the black section is one giant heat sink I decided I'd leave the fan in place just to swirl some air around it (Was tempted to put the cover back on but forgot about it)
Then it was a case of shoving that all inside my NZXT Phantom -
I found that for this to work I had to mod my side fans, I took out the side grill, took out one of the filters and removed the small inside HDD Rack, after this I made it a push/pull intaking air
The results! (The important bit)
Ambient Temp - 22c
As you can see there is a big change in temps. It has made my GTX480 a lot, wait for it... KUHLER (Had to be done)
So, the plan -
- Take apart my GTX480
- Measure up the screw holes
- Get a bracket cut
- Mod the cooler
- Fit together
- Hopefully enjoy cooler temps!
