Hi,

hmm I think I am getting the hump. I wrote just a few weeks ago about a failing NEOPower 480w that I had, it's +12v rails were starting to get quite low under load (+11.4v) so I had started to look into getting it rme'ed.

The thing is I had two of these PSU's, the second one was placed into a system that I sold to a Client/Friend running a modest P4 2.6GHz - 1GB PC3200 - 1x HDD - 1 x Optical and a few case fans. . . . anyway I got a call yesterday from my mate saying it had BLOWN UP!!!

Got my hands on the machine yesterday and when I try and power it up a loud *squeal* is emitted from the PSU, yup its toast (and smells weird too!)

I'm quite suprised actually, I always thought ANTEC was one of the best names in PSU's but this is the second PSU I've had of theirs thats blown.

Now I got two of them to ship back for RMA, wonder how much shipping is gonna be :(

Seen Below, The Original Modular PSU

Now I gotta buy two new PSU's, gotta be modular and gotta have braided cables. . . .

Antec are normally pretty decent, maybe you got unlucky with a particular batch?

What is your budget for the PSUs? Enermax offer modular PSUs at reasonable prices or you could take a look at Seasonic's new M12 range although they are more expensive.

Hi semi-pro waster & GhostRider,

lol thanks for *quick* reply. I am trying to spend the *right* amount to get the job done. I don't wanna slap something cheap into an otherwise nice spec machine, I certainly don't want it to blow again any time soon.

I'm looking at the PSU's now, one that leaps out at me is the Hiper HPU-4B580 Type R 580W Modular ATX2.2 PSU - Blue (CA-006-HP) £64.61 inc.

The machine that blew was quite modded so the reason I like the hyper is that it seems to have blue uv cables lol ;)

Otherwise I will consider all modular choices and then have to redo all the cable sheathing myself. . . .

This directive restricts the use of six hazardous materials in the manufacture of various types of electronic and electrical equipment. It is closely linked with the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE) 2002/96/EC which sets collection, recycling and recovery targets for electrical goods and is part of a legislative initiative to solve the problem of huge amounts of toxic e-waste. In casual conversation, it is often pronounced "ROHS", "Rosh", or "Row Haws", except in Europe, where it is pronounced "Rose"."

Ezee wizardmaxx,

yes I got that much from gOOgle, but sorry I am a bit thick :)

What does it mean actually :p

It a drive to make our world a little bit cleaner :p
Cool that makes sense and is worth an extra £6.06 :)

RoHS is shown as a feature on the HiperPower Type-R Modular Black 580w but *not* the same PSU at 530w.

Now I am just wondering what colour the black UV cables will show up as under a UV light?

Thats not good .. I hope it didnt take anything else to the graveyard with it when it died.
Yeah so do I, even though I have the unit here all I done at this stage is to remove the broken PSU, am now just ordering a replacement (HiperPower 580w Type-R Black or Blue) so until that arrives I am just thinking positively

Got a new Tagen Modular PSU here for another build I am doing, may have to unwrap that and slap it in to see whats up. . . .

Buy a Seasonic. Superbly quiet and very reliable.
Yeah I hear good things about the Seasonic PSU's but I really need it Modular and looking at the M12 range the cheapest unit is £93.99.

As mentioned above its powering a *very* modest set-up (P4 2.6GHz etc) and I am having to pay for this out my own pocket (while the NEOPower is being RMAe'd) Can't wait around (for RMA process) because this machine is used as part of a radio broadcast every week, bah I should know by now to keep a decent spare PSU around for situations like this. . . .

Having said that I now will have a spare hopefully, the one (or two) I get back from Antec. . .

Have you considered the OCZ modular psu's? I picked one up last week while there were on special and must say there a thing of beauty
As my first "proper" PSU I can't reccomend them enough, realy quiet, look great in a clear case and with a 36month warrenty you can't realy go wrong.

Yes, the OCZ ModStream 520w looks quite suitable, about the max I wanna pay too £65.00

Is any of that OCZ stuff UV reactive?

Otherwise the 580W HiperPower Type-R Modular Black/Blue PSU is looking good, will be buying two as well, hmmm maybe buy one of each? :o

Hiper HPU-4B580 Type R 580W Modular ATX2.2 PSU - Black/Blue (CA-006-HP)

OCZ ModStream 520w ATX2.2 Power Supply (CA-017-OC)

Same cost each: £64.61 Inc

Leaning towards the HiperPower because its UV reactive lol :)

Yeah quoted from the box "Modstream cooler illuminates your case interior while EZMod cables glow brilliantly when exposed to UV lighting"

The cooler light is just right, not overly bright so it catches your eye while looking at the monitor, just enough to lightly light up the case interior. I have no UV tube to test the cables, of which my only criticism would be there extremly stiff.
As it is my first decent PSU I have nothing to compare it against, but I did manage to pull an extra 200Mhz out of my chip since installing it, maybe a coincidence, maybe not.
