I'm building two systems today - work & media center

I'm trying to see which way is best to fit the AC Freezer 64 Pro into my Antec NSK1300.

With the fan on properly the heat sink touches the PSU - this results in the heatsink not being perfectly vertical and I am concerned about putting slightly uneven pressure on the CPU (Athlon 3700+)

With the fan off and the heatsink turned 180 it seems to fit fine - perfectly vertical and no touching. I could attach the fan to the otherside of the heatsink (using tape etc) and all would be well?

anyone else come across this issue?

Thanks

right,
I've fixed the fan round the other way by drilling a couple of holes in the plastic fan and attaching it to the heatsink with a bendy plastic tie.

I'll see how works once the whole thing is together

AAAAAARGH!!!

it just doesn't fit.
The DVD/HDD cage rests on top of the heatsink.

should I bend the top 3-4 fins out the way or give up and use the stock cooler?

Use the stock cooler. Or try a Siloverstone Nitrogon NT-03 or one of the smaller Zalmans or a Thermaltake Golden Orb - they all fit. The Thermaltake Blue Orb might fit, it depends on the motherboard socket position relative to the sides of the case. This advice is based on the fact that the NSK1300 appears to be the same case as the Antec Aria, but tarted up for the 21st century.

I built my brother's rig into an Antec Aria and made the mistake of buying a Freezer 64 Pro. As far as I could make out there was no way on God's green earth that cooler was fitting in that case :p

Instead we went for a Zalman CNPS7000B-ALCU Ultra-Quiet CPU Cooler - Retail (HS-008-ZA)

Fits the case perfectly and keeps my brothers 3700+ nice and cool even spinning at its lowest setting.

its in!

I removed 19 fins from the curved side to allow the HDD to fit in.
then I couldn't get the cables in and broke a SATA power cable in process :(
decided to fix HDD to the side instead of below DVD
this probably gives more space and better airflow to the heatsink...
I then bent a couple of bits of metal and attached a spare fan to the PSU blowing at the heatsink

think I'll get another cpu cooler for when I need to attach a 2nd HDD

You are aware that that those fins are there for a reason, and that you have possibly massively compomised the CPU cooling, not to mention trashing a perfectly good cooler?

I'd love to see some pictures though, especially if it does work.

Sounds like there isnt much left of it :)

A bit of an exageration slightly reduced the cooling affect at most if you ask me. Defo like to see some pics though!

I've taken some pics, will stick them on this afternoon.
no OS installed yet but
  • CPU&system temp about 44degC without fan, 39degC with
  • Can't install 2nd HDD below DVD (unless I can find some really small or L-shaped sata connectors...)
  • using amd stock fan from 3700+ box and its quite noisy, maybe I could fit a larger quieter one and fit it where that empty HDD is?
I just ordered a Zalman CNPS7000 Alu-Cop.

what sort of temps should I be getting?

haven't used an image host website for a while...

Fan attached

Zoom...
I used a stanley knife to score each fin, then repeatedly bent back and forth till it dropped off.

I removed this number of fins to fit the hard drive in, but couldn't manage to get the sata power/data cables in

air flow is rubbish like this.
I was tired...

new cooler arrives tomorrow!

Well, it is a neat mod anyway. 100% for effort. The best I managed was filing 5mm off one edge of a Thermaltake Blue Orb II to make it fit. The Zalman will be significantly better. Isn't getting the PSU in and out a real pain? I found I always ended up scratching the bit of angle bracket across the top to get it back in.
