Hey guys,

Can anyone suggest a freeware antivirus prog I could use?

I have been using AVG and wondered if there was anything better?

I know some antivirus will overlook certain things thats others would not therefore I am after something really good, well as good as possible that would cover me when downloading music and the usual stuff, please note I do surf some riske sites...

Thanks in advance

cheers

avast was deemed unsafe a while ago wasnt it? i remember using it and getting a virus hence my apprehensions...

any others I should be aware of ???

I heard kapersky was better then avg???

I guess I need to find some kind of authenicated site which would tell me what is the best "freeware" antivirus to use....

any ideas??

Personally I think AVG is as good as you are going to get, though I must confess I haven't tried Kapersky.

Was there not a sticky with reviews of virus scanners?

They are all as good as the last update.

Ive used it for a few years now and not had a problem. Its picked up a few which I had no idea about, but thats what a AV's meant to do.

Ive also used it on PC's infested with virus's and its done a great job removing them without damaging the system. If the AV program wont get rid of it, something else spyware releated will.

I have the benifit of using most AVs at work on systems infested with them. Ive always found Norton the worst for picking stuff up.

AVG Professional is a great product, removed many using that on systems at work. The free edition is equally good however im sure it uses 3 month old virus defs. (If ive read correctly) *Edit, not the case anymore IIRC

thanks for sharing your knowledge...

how can that work? surely the point of updating is to "update to the latest definitions"??

Im sure I heard it when I went to a trade show, AVG were there and one of their sales man was explaining it. However it seems like this is not the case now. See below...

What you do not get

no Automatic online-update, Available only with commercial versions
no Real-time monitoring of the entire system
no Self-protection at kernel layer guaranteeing gapless monitoring
no Consent for commercial use

Avast seems the better one of the two after reading that, as it support real time monitoring. Which means the only way of AVG detecting a virus is to scan?!

im paranoid about avast because I got so many viruses when I used them before...hmmmm

Where did you get the Virus's from?

Virus's dont just download on their own, surley Avast is doing its Job by picking up the Virus's? :)

no it missed the virus, it was 2 years back since which time I have been using AVG I just wanted to find an alternative - well find out if there was one...

I only found the virus when i ran a different antivirus back then....
