HI

I USE THE INTERNET AT HOME VERY FREQUENTLY & I'M IN NEED OF AN EXCELLENT ANTI VIRUS ETC

IS IT BEST TO JUST BUY AN ANTI VIRUS SOFTWARE ON IT'S OWN, AN INTERNET SECURITY SOFTWARE ON IT'S OWN, OR BOTH? AS I USE THE INTERNET FREQUENTLY WILL AN ANTI VIRUS ONLY SOFTWARE PROTECT MY PC, OR WOULD THE INTERNET SECURITY PACKAGE BE BEST?

OR ARE INTERNET SECURITY PACKAGES A WASTE OF TIME? AM I BEST TO BUY ALL SEPERATE PRODUCTS IE AN ANTI VIRUS ASWELL AS A FIREWALL, ASWELL AS ANTI SPAM ETC????????

IS IT POSSIBLE TO RUN BITDEFENDER STANDARD 9.0 & ZONE ALARM FIREWALL TOGETHER?

CAN ANYBODY TELL ME IF THESE 2 PRODUCTS ARE ANY GOOD?

PLEASE EXCUSE MY IGNORANCE, I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I NEED! ALL I DO KNOW IS THAT I WANT MY PC TO BE AS PROTECTED AS POSSIBLE!!! PLEASE HELP!!

THANKS

Capitals is considered shouting mate and taken as a bit rude. Select all and reduce your text to a normal size and i think you will get more help. :)

Personally i have used Avast for my AV and Windows firewall all this year.
Both are free reasonably lite and in my experience secure.
I also use Ad-Aware SE and Spybot search and destroy and Ewido. I run these every other day. I have also started using spyblaster.
So google the following and feel safe and secure.

1. Avast.
2. Ad-Aware SE
3.Spybot search and destroy.
4. Ewido.
5. Spyblaster.

Sorry i can't provide links but i am just dishing up my dinner. I will check back and if you post you cannot find any of the above i will provide links.

Whoa .... no neeed to shout mate ;) (joking)

For anti virus then I can't recommend NOD32 highly enough. Zone alarm just seems a pain in the arse to me so I stopped using that ages ago :(
Spybot is a cool program so I would recommend that, and I've found that Sygate Personal Firewall Pro is pretty neat so that also comes recommended. I also use Pest Patrol and AdAware also ;)

my apologies for shouting, didn't mean to be rude, was unaware of this!!

thanks for the reply! a bit concerned tho cos i've been warned away from free anti virus softwares as apparently they don't give the best protection???

thanks again :)

Another vote for NOD32, probably one of the cheapest and most effective Anti-Virus available to be honest.

To tell the honest truth I heard so much of NOD32. I'm sure it is great! :D
But when I tried it it was incompatible with my system. It didnt like something and kepr crashing.
So right now i'm on Kaspersky Security Suite...let's say i'll never look back to Norton again!

Quoting from the reply i gave from your thread below :|:

Hi there,

Quite a bit discussion on it here:

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17578120.

====

Sum up that thread:

You should have an anitvirus software, firewall and spyware cleaner type software.

Best Package of Software if you have money to spend

  • NOD32
  • ZoneAlarm Firewall
  • SpywareBlaster
  • CCleaner
  • Spybot Search and Destroy

Best Package of Software if you don't have money to spend

  • AVAST
  • ZoneAlarm Firewall
  • SpywareBlaster
  • CCleaner
  • Spybot Search and Destroy

Pretty much the same apart from the antivirus.

Hope it helps!

My personal top 10 of the "well-known" products...

1) Kaspersky - Best detection engine in the world... bar none, with hourly updates. If this little baby can't remove it then format c: because no other AV will. But then what do you expect from a product made by ex-KGB guys. :p

2) NOD32 - Second best detection rate there is, overall protection a small step behind Kaspersky but so light on the footprint and so low on resources that it has to be the gamers choice. For this reason alone I choose it over kaspersky. Had a couple of exploits recently but they were patched very quickly. I like it. :)

3)Panda Platinum Internet Security - Great and well-respected detection engine let down by a slightly unwieldy and user-unfriendly interface, as well as an occasionally troublesome firewall. However their truprevent technology is currently one of, if not THE most advanced protection engines there is for unknown threats. However,it is quite resource-intensive and requires a beefy PC with a fair bit of RAM. Take it from me the 2007 version of the software is going to be a LOT better with regards to all of the above, and will really be one to watch, trust me. ;)

4) Zone labs Security Suite - A solid, if uninspiring security package with the firewall we all know and love/hate. A good mid-ranking package with decent detection rate and what is accepted as a very good firewall, which is pretty much the only thing that makes it stand out. Admittedly pretty user-friendly too.

5) F-Secure - Pretty much as above but not quite as good spyware removal. Good firewall though and a very clean interface.

6) AVG professional The free version is well... "free" and performance reflects that, but the Pro version is more than passable, with decent detection, regular updates, and decent tech support.

7) PC-Cillin - Pretty alright really, decent virus detection let down by bad anti-spyware components and a bit of a buggy interface. I wouldn't run it personally.

8) Bitdefender 9 - Time-tested Av component and decent firewall, but with bad spyware removal and annoying and often confusing pop-ups. Anti-spam is also weak.

9) Mcafee - Almost as bad as Norton but not quite, still bloated with a crappy control center, and still misses a fair bit during scans. :(

10) Norton Internet Security- Mass-marketed rubbish that made a name for itself through beigng sold en masse to uneducated and uninformed users (don't mean that offensively). I have talked to corporate clients that switched form Norton (corp edition) to Panda (or other decent AV) and found a crapload of stuff that norton hadn't even sniffed... from bad trojans to nasty viruses. To those in the AV industry this company is pretty much the pits.

People never search. :(

I used search and found this thread so that should bring a smile to your face (or at least to the thread smilie).

I'm trying to find out a little more about F-Secure seeing as Barclays are giving away a 2 year sub free to Barclays customers.

I will be needing to find an A/V program for 6 pc's very soon (family pc's all due to expire within a month or two).

Uses scanning engine for Kaspersky I think so virus protection and cleaning is top-notch, definately worth a free pop. :)

Make sure you get Kaspersky.

I've been using it for nearly a year and was involved in the beta testing of Kav6 and I been blown away by it.

If I understand correctly, one copy of Kav6 is licenced for 2 machines so you will only need 3 copies. Don't quote me on that though.

Forget F-Secure. I removed it from several machines last week as it was performing poorly and replaced them with Kaspersky.

If you don't want Kaskpersky, get NOD32 but remember its quite abit behind in times compared with Kav.

Totally agree with Kaspersky. I am using this on my computer and I can personally say that it is the best AV software I have ever used. I also would recommened Sygate as a Firewall if you can't afford a hardware firewall :)

Another big vote for kaspersky here too, it gets kinda dismissed round here over nod32 but i've personally found it better in every respect. And I'm wondering why both Barracuda & Borderware use the Kaspersky engine in their products if it isn't that hot?...

I also agree Kaspersky is the best I've used. It is light, thorough and in my view beats the much (over)hyped NOD32 (which also has too confusing a GUI for the average user). I'm currently testing the latest beta of Bitdefender 10 which I also like a lot but currently if I had to buy a license it would be for Kaspersky.
