Ive got avast at the moment but it makes my PC really slow to boot up and not as quick as it was before - anything faster and less of a system hog?

all AVs will have some effect on the system boot up speed. I find avast! to be pretty quick. However if it is just at bootup and you are happy with avast. why switch?

It just takes 3-4 mins too boot my PC up :S Ive got a laptop with Dolthan 1.5ghz CPU with 1.25gig of Ram. Seems a little slower for general use too.

nod32 is lighter than avast, on my housemate's pc, avast really made it sluggish, its a lot better with nod32

NOD32 or Kaspersky in my experience, though i'd say NOD32 is a touch faster.

My renewal is coming up soon though and i'll likely to switch to Kaspersky (gonna have another trial) and see how it goes, as i've had NOD32 for a year now and i was really impressed and pleased with it's performance.

I've even to taken to recommending it to customers at work if they should ask about which Anti-Virus to buy, i highly regard it as a fast, effective and cheap method for keeping the PC safe without causing a drag on the system.

Kaspersky will get another trial soon though and i'll make my mind up based on how it performs during the trial.

I used Norton Anti Virus until it came up for renewal, didn't want to pay the subscription price so switched to Nod32,

I couldn't believ the speed difference. will be using Nod32 for the foreseeable future, and as stated above, it a bargain.

Norton is THE worst piece of software ever written, as somebody who gets called fairly often to fix pc's I'd estimate that 90% of the sytems that don't have hardware faults are fixed by simply uninstalling Norton.

I use AVG but set it up so it doesn't run until I tell it to as I cannot stand the way anti viri software has become over-intrusive and under-configurable in recent years.

Got avast installed on all my machines, never noticed any slow down. I did used to have mcafee though.

Using avast here too. I would hazzard a guess that there's something else wrong with the OP's pc. Perhaps a defrag by access is in order.

I don't think your slow boot-up lies with avast. Sounds like your PC is in general need of a clean up.

Do the usual detox:

Remove unused/unnecessary programs and applications.
Run disk clean up.
Scan for viruses and spyware.
Defrag.
Run msconfig and go to the start up tab. Untick any programs and applications that you don't want at start up.

My PC boots up in 5 seconds on a good day and 10seconds on a bad day with Avast. It doesn’t appear to slow my PC down and it works well so I recommend Avast.

i never had problems with avast and slowing any pc down that i installed it on. however, i no longer use it because avg was picking up rootkits that avast couldnt find!

Could always try the AOL Active Virus Shield that people state is Kaspersky. Not sure if it's less resource hungry than Avast, so will be interesting to know.

On my home PC I run AVG free edition. Seems fine for my needs, for basic email scanning.

Yep. My pub boss gets his son-in-law to fix the business PC...by putting Symantec/Norton on there.

Boss getting spam? Answer? Put some Symantec spam blocker on there!

Great! Slow the PC down even more.

NOD32 or Kaspersky then for paid for solutions or the AOL Active blah blah blah rebranded Kaspersky for a free one.

Is the resident anti-virus turned off? if thats the word for the system checker that scans everything all the time as this may be slowing things down, is there any need to scan every file as you use it? I doubt it, just run a scan on newly downloaded items and a general scan every month/week/few days/day/hour depending on how paranoid you are.

Ive put it on two times - when its removed the PC is fast again. Maybe my 3-4mins boot up is missleading.... PC boots up in the same time - once logged into my account, it then takes 3-4mins to make the PC fully useble... theres a lot of harddisk activity.
