Antivirus & firewall for online gaming

I have searched and got loads of recommendations for antivirus and firewall packages. I am just checking to see which one will interfere less with online gaming.

I uninstalled Norton antivirus yesterday as it was continuously interfering with BF2 with “worm detected popup” that cannot be turned off. Norton is like a damn virus it cannot be switched off, even in task manager. I do not need an AV that has pop-ups that can't be turned off.

Which of these 2 will be the most unobtrusive: Kaspersky or NOD32.

I am thinking of changing firewalls or just using the XP firewall - is it any good. I am currently using the NVIDIA firewall which sometimes causes online games to hang when they are first installed or after an update/patch due to an issue with the access authorization pop-up.

Maybe I should just use free Zonealarm as I did in the past even though there was a reason why I stopped using it - can't remember why.

Don't use ZA for a gaming installation, it is a nightmare. As for Norton, do yourself a favour and remove that bag of crap from your machine now!

I presume you are using XP so in that case the XP SP2 built in firewall will be absolutely fine. As for AV something like AntiVir (free) or NOD323 (paid) are the best low usage/effectiveness trade off for antivirus on a gaming rig. Don't forget to also run a spyware scan eevry now and then, Adaware is fine for that.

Aj

Is Mcafee Security Center 8 ok, im using this now... bult in firewall etc...

Updates daily, then I will be running the tools you told me yesterday ... :)

Sorry bit off topic, but it may help him, he may want Mcafee! :p

I use: NOD32 + ZoneAlarm (Free one)

I game online occasionally too and its the best combination i have used.

I used to use McAfee internet security and switch everything off before I played a game which too about a minute. But now i can play without worry.

I attempted to uninstall this piece crap yesterday and it bombed half way through the uninstall process and now I can't get rid of all of it. I even used the Norton's uninstall utility which I got from their site but it was unable to remove the entire Symantec updater program. For some reason I can't even delete the registry entries - I real mess.

A similar thing occurred to me years ago with Norton's and I had to do a complete windows reinstall - I vowed never to use it again but in a moment of weakness I succumbed. Huge mistake as it's more difficult to get rid off than any virus I have come across.
