My ModMic arrived from the states today after a long anticipated wait!

A simplistic packaging design with all you need in it, all you need to know on it with plenty of protection for the contents. Lovely packaging, less really is more.

A nice little personalised message also! I had been discussing with Jimmy on email after ordering how I was replacing an ageing desk standing mic that picked up far too many mechanical keyboard noises. :D

Inside you get your modmic+fixings. 2 magnetic adhesive backed mounting points and a wipe to clean your intended target area.

The unit actually looks bigger in the online literature and other reviews I had seen and I was taken back by how tiny it actually is!

Here it is next to a can ring pull for an idea of size:

I will be leaving mine attached permanently as it's not an issue for me with my headphone usage (PC only). As such I really wanted a solution to attach the modmic cable to my headphone cable. Cable ties were an option but they are somehwat bulky and have a tendency to catch. Aesthetically they are not all that pleasing either.

Then I remembered - I had some YEARS old cable braiding I bought for an Athlon XP 3200 build and NEVER used. The smaller width stuff was perfect for the cable widths involved but I tried everything to get it expanded over one side of my HD650's cable plugs.....no chance :( The thicker width one I had was shorter in length so I compromised. The bulk (almost all) of the cable that is 'out and about' is braided and there is zero chance of entanglement or catching.

The remaining length is tacked on with additional bits of shrink wrap without braiding. The ModMic cable length is almost identical to my 650s which made this task pretty easy - bargain!

The solution stops tangling/catching and is no doubt going to save lots of cable management headache! When I next bring in some new hardware I might add on a suitable length of braiding and redo the whole length but for now this works great.

As for performance. Well, everything that was promised and more. I am very very happy with it. I must use Mic Boost with my Xonar STX. With the levels at 100 without boost I am audible but not just quite enough volume.

With Mic Boost on and the levels set to around 15 I am crystal clear on comms and there is no discernible noise or hiss. If you ramp up the levels further with mic boost on there will be a hiss that increases in loudness. The levels required for it to be a noticeable issue however are obnoxious - You would be VERY loud to whoever/whatever you were broadcasting/recording to. Whether this is noise from my system/soundcard/something else or just an inevitable result of Mic Boost is beyond my ability to discern but it's a non-issue so /care!

To wrap up here is a picture of my HD650s avec ModMic. Apologies for the somewhat rusty ear covers....goes to show how much use my pair has had! A refurb is planned when I can pickup some appropriate paint. I thoroughly recommend this mic to anyone who needs such a solution! Jimmy got mine sent out pretty much instantly and followed up with an email also. A top notch service for a top notch product.

I've had one of these for the last couple of months. Fantastic product, would recommend to anyone who wants to use proper headphones and a mic.
