Ants under house!

Hi All

After a bit of advice really. We have had a problem with ants for a few weeks now. At first they were just on the driveway but seem to have moved into the house. I think their nest is actually underneath the foundations as there is a hole leading into the foundations and they have been coming out from under the skirting board in that location. My partner came home the other day to over 50 flying ants in the front room. I have tried pouring a boiling kettle of water down the hole but that's made no difference. I didn't want to seal the hole up in case they are underneath and then it forces more of them into the house. I have set some of those Nippon Ant Bait Traps that is supposed to poison them over a series of days but not sure if there's much more I can do? We keep a very clean home so there is no food or anything left out to attract them and everything is in airtight containers. Would it be worth calling an exterminator or would he just bait them like we have?

Wait. Plenty of stuff you can buy yourself to get rid of them. Best thing is to put a big Mac down as that will kill them all off! lol

We had a load of ants coming in from under our laminate floor - or rather from under the skirting around the edges. I pulled out the skirting and put loads of Nippon powder in the gap around the edge, then put the skirting back - haven't had any since :)

Best thing to do is find every entrance and liberally apply poison!

Those bait traps are supposed to be quite good too, as the little blighters take the poison back to the nest.

Thanks guys. The missus has just been home and told me she only saw 1 ant on the drive and none in the house so it looks like the bait may be working! There were hundreds of the damn things yesterday so fingers crossed :)

We also had some inside an upstairs bedroom, not a nice find at 10PM, we just put a bit of Polyfiller over it as thats all we had in the house and no more since

+1 for nippon ant killer powder

ant's walk it back to their nests, I'm guessing the nippon feeding stations have the same stuff inside them

I put some Nippon gel stuff down a few weeks ago and after a week I stopped seeing them. Only saw them eating it one night, I thought they had got wise but seems it did its job.

The slow acting ones work brilliantly, just give them a few days/a week. The idea on most of them is that the poision is coated in something appealling (often sugar), and they carry it back to the nest, and THEN it is released, so it destroys the entire colony. Very effective, but takes a little while to work.

Glad things are improving anyways, it's a miserable thing to have to deal with.

Ants have a useful role in the garden so I've never bothered trying to kill them off.
They like warm places to nest, so if you have flagstones in the sun then you are just providing a nice place for a colony.

Thanks guys, a bit of an update 4 days on, the amount of ants we are now seeing has reduced drastically. I did notice some holes in the pointing low down on the front of the house. I filled these in with exterior Pollyfilla as I could see ants coming out and going back in. We put 2 Nippon bait traps inside the house and 2 on the outside. My partner came home yesterday to 2 dead flying ants which 4 days ago was more like 50 after one day so I think it seems to be working touch wood! :)

Fun fact about ants is the males and fertile females stay in the next, all of the ants outside are infertile females bringing food to the fertile females and males for a mid shag snack.

I tend to mix sugar together with crushed paracetemol and dot it around, kills em off nice and quick. Kill the production and kill the ants.

The ants outside are male too.

We had loads a coupla years back and last year the missus gran hand ants all over her kitchen :(

Those Nippon Bait traps cleared both up within a matter of weeks, the ones that look like little hockey pucks. We used 4, only needed 2 at her grans.

Think theyre about £3 for 2 in asda

Thanks guys, yeah we have 4 of the Nippon traps down, also I got a load of the ant bait liquid on strips of card, and Nippon powder down too. I think the traps are working as the activity has reduced. We are still getting them a week on but no where near as many. We did discover another hole in the pointing low down on the front of the house with ants coming out and going in so I put raid in swept all the ants out and used external Pollyfilla to seal the hole up. Fingers crossed! :)
