So all of this folding, this seti etc..

Has anything of note been accomplished from all of this?

Well, SETI hasn't turned up any evidence for alien life so far, so in that respect it's accomplished absolutely nothing.

On the other hand, just because it hasn't found anything yet doesn't mean that it never will. It just might not be searching within the right frequency bands, in which case it might eventually accomplish something by telling astronomers to retune their radio telescopes. Or it might lead to more advanced versions of it that can perform more sensitive, thorough searches, which just might turn something up one day.

And then there's the fact that the original SETI got people into Distributed Computing in the first place, so it's accomplished a heck of a lot in that regard!

Anyways, all that's moot really because b0rkeley et al are pointing their radio dishes in the wrong direction. They need to aim them downwards to try and find intelligent life on Earth...

The original SETI spent 2,433,980 years of CPU time achieving pretty much nothing :p

For me, SETI was where it all started, and it was the spirit of its scientific endeavour which got me into Folding. These days I see Folding as a bit more useful, as it's actually turning out verifiable scientific results. SETI is completely all-or-nothing, though, so who knows?

Leiden, Climate Prediction and Rosetta have all had papers published.
SIMAP has an ever expanding database of proteins and their functions available to bioinformaticists around the world.
LHC helped build one of the most sophisticated scientific instruments on the planet.
Einstein at home continues to improve the sensitivity of the laser interferometers searching for mavity waves.

That's just scratching the surface of the varied BOINC projects out there. Try Boincstats for a list of all projects and then the individual project pages for news of their achievements.
