Hi for many years since the days of school I have never had good handwriting and I cant write joined up- It all goes back to the days of Primary School were I was never shown it. It has never really bothered me as I have all ways gotten by with a PC and just printing.

I start a new job in a month and I no there will be loads of writing to be done as I will be a support worker.

I would like to try and improve my handwriting in some way, has any body else out there used a certain book or even a certain site on the web to improve there handwriting ??

I am all so going to buy some decent pens as I guess they would help... Any advice on what pens you think might suit me and make it a little easier.

thanks for any help ;)

Write a few sentences and post it up as a picture for us to see if it really is that bad.

I never write joined up only the occasional letter. Once you've found yourself a comfortable pen to use which you can just go test out in a stationers to see which you like the feel of the most, just write with it. Practise and a bit of time.

My hand writings has always been terrible, Just like my fathers. you'd be able to tell we were related just by looking at our hand writing.

I did have a special tutor for a while for a few learning difficulties I had. Most of it was education based. Although there were a few hand exercises i did to help limber up my fingers so i could join up letters and right smoother. Cant remeber what they were I guess just roll your wrists and wriggle your fingers, draw circles or something to that effect is all i can suggest :)

I left school to start working in shops. For the next 8-9 years the only writing I did was on hp and insurance forms. A while later I had a position in finance for 12 years. I can only write quickly using block capitals now. Nobody can read my 'joined up' writing if written at the same speed.

A thin nibbed felt tip pen helps though as I don't seem to press on the paper as hard.

At school they used to give kids who weren't good at hand writing a triangle thing that slips over the pen / pencil. I think it was to get their fingers in the right position. Might be worth a try.

left handed or right handed?

if left avoid fountain pens or pens with ink that doesnt dry instantly.

will have to be something which is ballpoint. just a cheap parker ballpoint should help matters. i can only write for so long with a normal hexagon biro as it digs into my fingers.

i have crap handwriting too.

yeh, i'm blessed with the gift of self-smudging handwriting like that, one of the downsides to being a leftie :(

Other suggestion is to have a look at the local colleges and see if there is a calligraphy class going on, even though it's really fancy writing, it will teach you letter formation and how to write properly!

I blame keyboards.

Mine looks like a kid's now since I never really have to write anymore.

/raises hand.

I blame keyboards too. I can write really nicely when i take my time but most of the time... =/

no camera Will bump this thread up tomrrow and show you what its like with a picture.. to be honest to me it doesnt look realllllly !! bad. but all my family and even my mrs all way comment on how bad it is.

I have a 'doctors' handwriting, so I keep getting told.

I see it as a form of encryption. No one can read it but I :D

As for the OP, practice makes perfect ;)

I'm terrible at handwriting, for 8 years the school tried everything, it wasn't until my mum showed me how she writes, that it became legible all though still poor.

it's called Looped Cursive

some examples here

goggle for more.

Also use a 0.5mm black pen with a hard nib, like ones they use for graphical drawings or a good gel pen. first just concentrate on making each letter perfect. just copy them out hundreds of times each or until they look good, then just start copying from a book. you will need to start very slow, make sure each word is perfect as you get the flow then you will naturally speed up.

you can try writing the lower case alphabet joining the letters together. Your pen should only come off the page twice - once to dot the i, and once to cross the t.

I have a similar problem. I had an operation about 10 years ago that I didn't recover from very well. When I came round I had lost the ability to write and I was missing lots of words when I spoke.

I have had to learn all over again but my handwriting is awful. My spelling isn't what it use to be either. When I write it is a mixture of print and joined up writing.

It is a real pain as people think you are slow or something. I recently had a new boss who read a report I had written. He called me in and said he was concerned about the level of education I had received. When I told him my story he was most embarressed. Worse for me I suppose as I work in education.

I wouldn't worry about it, Doctors have bad hand writing and they get away with it. Try to type your reports where possible.

My handwriting was killed by my 3rd year computing teacher.
I used to be able to write reasonably well, then she would turn up with pre-written notes, stick them on the OHP and read them out at normal talking pace :( had to completely change my style to keep up with her and now i cant get it back :( (although i never find the need to write anything by hand)

I'm left handed, and have never had a problem with smudging ink.

My handwriting is atrocious though. I only ever write in block capitals now too, so my cursive handwriting has been left to degrade.

I used to go to special needs classes for my handwriting. It's worse now I think. But it's perfectly readable usually so it's fine for the occasional times I have to hand write. It's annoying I always have to go and buy a pen before my exams. I never really need them for anything else.
