Hi all,

I've been gradually upgrading my three yr old computer for ages now, got a ATI Radeon 4870 1024mb a couple of months ago, and a new shiny case which is all working nicely, but now thinking of spending the money for a new motherboard, processor and RAM.

I'm going for the AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 940 Black Edition 3.0GHz (Socket AM2+) processor, the Gigabyte GA-MA78G-DS3H AMD 780G (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 motherboard, and Kingston HyperX 4GB (2 X 2GB) DDR2 8500C5 1066MHz RAM.

I run XP and really can't be arsed to get Vista when windows 7 looks as though it'll be much better!

Any tips? Especially on changing motherboards, I know there can be problems but think I'm equipped!

Cheers

Well my thinking with the quad-core is that even though not all games will optimize it now, in the future they almost certainly will so I'm quite keen to jump on the bandwagon now. I've got a 600W OCZ psu, should cope with the task admirably!

i'd have a look at the Asus M4A78 PRO AMD 780G, AMD Phenom II X3 Tri Core 720 Black Edition and the Sunbeam Core Contact Freezer CPU Cooler.

just make sure the mobo stands are all in the right place before you put the mobo in as it can cause shorts so the system wont power up, aside from that make sure you have all the latest drivers available and do a fresh install.

Thanks, appreciate the advice! Only bugger is that I've lost my XP installation CD so have to get a new one just in case I make a complete arse of everything!

I agree with mp re spec, and youre more than likely going to have to do a fresh install of windows, they dont tend to take to well to the mobo being swapped out. Personally Id look at vista, I strongly suspect w7 will be just as problematic for first 6 months til sp1 gets released, just like they all are, but thats just me

Well had to pay 25quid for a new set of recovery disks, but a small price to pay when compared to buggering up my pc! Hopefully I'm all set for swapping my mobo and processor! Cheers fellas

if you not bothered about the risk on buying an abit mobo the IP35 is fine i have had one foir over a month now and no issues jus update the BIOS at £60 its a steal:D
