Sooo close to dropping the money on a switch and a couple of access points, but the lack of a self hosted controller does freak me out a little.

Anyone have experience with them? Thoughts so far?

We have one demo setup and one large (25 access points) customer system running and both are very good. It’s just that little bit cheaper than Ubiquiti and it works just as well as the delivery system for Untangle.

Only thing thats holding me back at the moment is the lack of self hosted controller, one of my big hates is "needing" the cloud to configure and maintain kit you own.

It’s a dealbreaker for 99% of our customers. Supposedly there will be a local controller option and a ‘very powerful’ router option in 2024 but when in 2024 isn’t open information right now. I’m just a registered installer and not on the beta programme etc. and they seem to have inherited Ubiquiti’s aversion to published roadmaps.

I wish them well, the gear is very well made and the web interface itself is excellent but as you say, the imminent prospect of a cabinet full of paperweights if they go bust is very real.

The killer is I have the change to pickup 2 access points and the 8 port poe switch for £300 inc vat. Seems too good to be true but price wise, I'm struggling to see alternatives.

I was looking at these as i need to sort out my new home. I have discounted them as no local control.

To be fair, you’re not their target market. They don’t really care if they get some ‘hobbyist’ home users, they’re targeting small and medium business with a fully managed solution. If you’re not looking to install multiple access points with switches you’re literally just overhead bandwidth on their servers and you’ll likely clutter up the feature request threads with home user requests that they’re just not interested in fulfilling.

There isn’t any alternative at the price but if you want local control then really you shouldn’t be looking at Alta Labs and you should just bite the bullet and buy UniFi. It’s probably worth the extra if you want local controller hosting.

The Aruba stuff looks similarly priced for what I'm looking at. Money burning a hole in my pocket
