Just fixed a mates PC which was using Norton Internet Security up to date and found 24 Trojans on the machine that had not been removed by Norton...just a continous ammount of errors flashing up all over the place. I installed AVG AV and that seemed to remove a lot of them. Some were lodged in the windows system restore files...so I turned system restore off and rebooted to clear the restore files. I have ran Adaware and cleaned up all the temp internet files etc. etc. The system was basically just full of spyware and crap etc.
ANything else to try to ensure that all is good to go???

Im going to take norton out and probably put back in AVG or Antivir along with a decent/simple firewall system. Is it just me or is this Norton Internet Security stuff a real pain in the butt!

Thanks

Norton is one of the worst 'antivirus' products out there. Remove it.

I would suggest getting a trial version of NOD32 or Kaspersky to give the system one last scan to make sure everything is gone. You may even wish to purchase one of them if you like them. (I hear TrendMicro HouseCall online scanner is also quite good if you don't wish to install one of the trials - LINK)

Once the system is clean and you don't wish to purchase an antivirus - then you can carry on using AVG or AntiVir.

A good firewall is essential, I would suggest ZoneAlarm free version (Google search it).

For total protection, I also use some antispyware tools. I use Ad-aware SE, Spybot S&D, Windows Defender (BETA2) and Spywareblaster.

Hope this helps a little.

Thanks for the reply. Norton is gone...and ive pretty well done most of what is recommended. TrendMicro HouseCall seemed to pick up a few items that wasnt picked up by others...bookmarked that! Still having problems getting some adware out...but gona try Search and detroy and see if thats better.

Thanks

What's you opinion on Symantec Antivurs Coporate (v10), as we use it at work. I've trusted it so far, but perhaps it's based on the same code as Norton??

my understanding is there's some fundamental difference that makes the coporate one not suck. however, i've no idea what it is or i could just be totally wrong.

edit: from the wikipedia

It should be noted, however, that the Corporate Edition does not bear any of these perceived problems.

Couldnt have said it better then killer Uks wise words.

I deal with Viruses/spyware on a daily basis its my job to squish em out so to speak ;) but u cant go wrong with going Killer Uks route.

It tends to offer a more complete soloution when u use a bunch of programs my personal setup is Kaspersky 6.0 Virus protection/Sysgate firewall. And runing spybot/Ewido
but even im still on that almighty quest to find a good overall soloution.

Ive noticed overtime despite running good top end programs a lot of the issues are the new threats like errorgaurd/winfixer popping up they go right thru SP2 firewall and many other popups software..... as always the quest continues.
