Been wondering about getting Asus RT-AC56U as it is now around £75 new. Has anyone got any experience with this router? Seems like a great deal at that price.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I am looking to get this too in the near future. Reviews seem good aslong as you don't need extended range - due to the internal antennas.

It's the clean standup design that attracted me.

I bought one second hand. Was a bit wary as had a poor experience with the dual router modem n55u but that was a different property. Bought the n56u from MM for 40 quid and after an initial headache between putting my ISP router into bridge mode and trying to use custom firmware (padavan's) I got it set up. Had to reinstall the Asus firmware. That said it's been rock solid. Much better than the tg582n it replaced. I would easily recommend it.

This is the AC56U. Do you have this or the N56?

I an n56 from the MM a little while back, I installed some custom firmware on it and it's been great. The wireless is nice and fast, and I get the full speed of my connection throughout the house on wifi with my laptop/tablet (152Mb). So if that's anything to go by the AC56U will be even better.

Seems no one has one of these. I decided to hold out a while longer. Not in a big rush anyway.

I think its a bit overpriced for what u are actually getting

I guess that would depend on one's point of view. If all you will do is use it for WiFi and not make use of any of it's features, then sure you would be absolutely correct.

Then again this is a AC standard router, if you know what that means you would also know that you cannot get them much cheaper than that price bracket for similar performance or brand.

I was going to keep it standard aslong as it played nice with PPoE and the BT OR Modem.

What gains have you had with Merlin out of interest?

I havent used merlin mine doesnt support it. Its the same as the ASUS one looks the same and everything just has more options like saving the traffic log to the USB stick and stuff like that. You can see what device is using the most traffic and stuff like that. I guess all the ASUS features are just more in depth?

Ah ok, I'll give the stock FW a go first before I flash Merlin.

I'm in the process of moving home so it'll have to wait till I'm settled.
