Bought a bike off some FB guy for 20 quid but a lot has been changed on it.

Getting it ready for summer bike rides but needs a new headset as it appears to be incomplete.

Here are the pictures of old headset:

Obviously there is something dodgy going on as that bearing race at the bottom shouldn't be exposed!

Any help would be appreciated as I dunno what to buy. Also would that old headset need to be knocked out from inside the tube when replaced?

Cheers guys.

Yup that'll be a ZS44 headset, you'll need to change the crown race(the part at the bottom of the tube of the fork) if you buy one with cartridge bearings over the cage/ball setup you have.

OK I knocked the old cups out and got this:

So that linked headset should be same looking as this? I know some headsets have massive cups but these are small.

Also are those bearings integrated to the cups? I can't seem to separate them.

And don't these headsets come with fork crown race or do those have to be bought separately? If separately how do I know they are compatible with the linked headset?

I will be changing the forks too.

Thanks.

What you have a cheap version of a semi integrated were the bearing is part of the cup yes.

The one linked says sealed, that may well be caged ball bearings or an actual cartridge type bearing but both will be apart unlike yours.

You will end up with something like this

That is not the correct fitting but for reference of the parts. You could probably get away with the same crown race on a cartridge bearing as they look to be the same angle. Measure the OD of the cup to make sure it is 44mm too!
