i have been having problems with my sky boradband not working. even though the router displays the internet as being on, i cannot connect.

having been on the phone to sky technical help i was told to take the faceplate of my phone socket and plug directly into test socket. this instantly rectified the problem.

my question is, if it works plugged directly into the test socket does this mean i can just replace the faceplate or is it more complicated than this?

Do you have any extensions running off the master socket? If there are and the problem goes away when you use the test socket it suggests these are the problem. I believe BT will charge you to sort these out as they're only bothered up to the test socket on the master socket; anything else is your problem.

This leads on to the second point, which is that you're not legally allowed to modify anything on their side of the test socket IIRC, which means you can replace the faceplate part that plugs in to the test socket, but not the whole socket itself.

If it works in the test socket it means your internal wiring or existing microfilters are faulty. Changing the faceplate it one option if you are able to plug the modem in and leave it connected to your master socket.

how do u mean extension? i have just the one telephone socket a microfilter connected which in turn feeds my router and sky box and telephone.

currenty im connected to the test socket? is this ok as a more permanant option? i will speak to my landlord as there is no way im paying bt for having any work done.

Did you previously have Socket -> Microfilter -> (ADSL) + Splitter (Sky/Telephone) with extensions running off the splitter?

If so, do you now have the exact same setup with it just going straight in to the test socket instead of the front bit of the master socket? Did the front bit of the master socket look like it was/is connected to anything else other than the plug on the back going in to the test socket?

The bit behind the main faceplate is the test socket, yeah
