Any coin experts around?

Can anyone tell me what this coin it worth?

There's something not right about this coin. It's clearly meant to be a gold coin but the grainy texture of the surface and the brown colouring in the recesses, especially clear on the rear of the coin, doesn't fit with a solid gold coin.

The reverse of the coin is a common Byzantine one, which is an unusual find in Britain, though not impossible. However the vast majority of Byzantine coins have forward facing Monarchs and I can't find the rear design on anything other than low denomination coins made from bronze and the odd silver one. The gold coins seem to be much more ornate with figures on the reverse.

Some parts of the 'M' on the reverse is way too defined compared to the rest of the coin which makes it look to me like it has been made to look worn and old, there's also what appears to be file marks on both the front and back which are also indicating man-made wear rather than natural. It's probably a fake/replica but still nice to find in your garden I guess.

Thanks for all the replies again.

Heard back from 1 of the places I emailed and it seems like it's a 'tourist fake' - basically something that's sold at museums etc. I'll still wind my friend up telling her its legit :p
