I have a z-5500 and i was think buying the xfi soundcard with optical inputs so that i could connect my surround sound and maybe even and amplifier...

Will sound sound any better connected to an optical instead of just 6ch direct?

thnx-Rycon

Not unless there's loads of interference really, plus optical would be limited to 2 channels on the X-Fi (unless it was a DVD)

So the optical jack on the fps edition is mainly for dvd players? and wath about an amplifier connceted with optical?

x-fi's dont output 6 channel with the optical jack unless whatever your doing has a dolby digital or dts soundtrack, as phil mentioned. if you want it for games, you'll only get 2 channel. stick to analogue:)

In proper seperates market, digital outputs are used to pass variable number of channels to av amp/av processor for decoding, as the analogue sections in the device are usually low quality. Also it means the signal is digital during processing. If you send analogue into av amp the amp will convert that to digital, using processing, then convert it back.

so my z-5500 connected with 3.5mmpins i shouldnt bother connecting them with optical and when it comes to and amplifier its worthit to connect it with optical
