I'm after a Nikon 105mm macro lens second hand. Looking around it appears the older version was made in Japan and the newer ones are made in China. Just wondering if it's likely to make any noticeable difference?

The Japanese models tend to be better made, but that is often by design rather anything else (Nikon make their premium product in japan).

So would it be worth getting a Japanese model, even if it means its older? (2006-2008: Japan. 2010-today: made in China.) I have seen a few on ebay and they look in very good condition. i guess with an expensive lens you're going to look after it. Only £100 saving over a new 'grey' one, but they would be a China made version.

New from UK is out of the question as I can justify paying £620 for a lens :(.
