Hmmmm I might have to look into this. Sadly not using a laptop which would be less energy, as I'm extensively using Photoshop and InDesign. Also tend to have a TV on playing youtube as I work... lol
What energy supplier are you with atm?

These are options available via Octopus with 1 year history if you wanted to have a look, make sure you got the right region though and at top of page are the different tariffs.

I was with Shell, and tried to switch to Ocotpus before they took over but it got put on hold because they were buying them out so I''m currently stuck with Shelll... It's a bit annoying really.

Worst part of a smart meter is the little gadget they give you to see your bill increasing in real time.
I love the IHD, its not at all accurate for actual cost that you will pay for the day but it saves me running down to gas and leccie meter at 12am/pm to write meter readings down (gas is outside in alleyway)

Why do you need to write readings down?
Honestly is a good way to see if there are any issues in the home, if gas usage spikes and we have nothing different = leak same with electricity, can be quite a nice early warning system to let your supplier know something is wrong and get it sorted before you check your next bill and its hundreds over what you normally get.

I have done it for years and it gave me a pretty solid baseline for choosing battery storage but I didn't account for the solar/battery equipment adding 80-140w draw on top of houseload so kwh per day went up a couple lol

Not sure wth happened but I went I created the sheet I went through eon account and added in back to 2021 and apparently in one entry I used 1,344kwh in 25 days lol, daily average of 53kwh, absolutely no idea wth happened back then but must have been sorted when it happened.

I just use the app now, IHD doesn't work with agile anyway.

I just have it for meter readings, as long as everything is in check its a good day :) Also good for if any issues do crop up I can send in if requested to adjust any discrepancy due to faults.

I've had a smart meter for a few years and despite changing providers several times since, I've had no issues. The IHD is a bit basic but it works well and has always shown me the correct pricing and usage, and as I've got electric heating the usage indicator serves as a handy reminder if I've left a heater on in a room or something.

I'm with Octopus at the moment and have earned £13.60 through their Octoplus saving sessions since the start of Nov last year, which is pretty good when it just involves saving a bit of energy for an hour now and then.

Tip for people about to get a smart meter fitted:

Ask the sparky nicely to fit an isolator while they're there.

I wish I'd asked him when we had ours fitted. It would be really handy for knocking the power off to the whole house.

Great shout. It's free at the time or 100 quid separately.

1 - It needs electricity to run....which you have to pay for, I know it's low but it is not free energy.
2 - The old ones, becomes useless when you switch supplier
3 - They can report mistakes and suddenly you end up with a bill in the 5 figures (see plenty of news on this....unlikely but does happen).
4 - It's a good idea to check the meter box now and again, to spot any potential issues in that area.
5 - Don't really want the companies to monitor my daily usage or habit/patterns, more data = easier to target and move peak / off-peak.

I might be getting too cynical and tin foil on the last one but the apart from convenience, I don't see why I need them.
1: A lie.
2: A lie.
3: So can the moron in the middle.
4: Are you an electrician - probably best not touch it.
5: Why would you not want to make predicting power generation better.

Why would point no.1 be a lie? The meter runs on farts? Seriously, what is that screen run off of if not electricity? It’s not a zero amount. Unplug your smart meter, take out the batteries…does it still work with no power? I think not…so between the 2 of us, you are the liar.

As for point no.4 when I say look there, I can tell if a wire is fraying like any idiot, like if a cockroach has started chewing through it. You don’t need to be an electrician to notice something different to last time you seen it.

As for point 3, if it’s a wrong reading, it’s my fault, I’ll blame myself thanks. I’m not reading your metering, if it goes wrong because if my mistake, I’ll pay for it, I’m not asking you to.

No.2 is not a lie, plenty of people here have personal experience with this, just read the thread.

As for point 5….IMO, less they know the better. I don’t see any advantage of them knowing my usage habit. These companies’ aim is to make as much money out of us, that is entirely their goal…data = knowledge and helps them to make more money out of us.
