Any downsides to a smart meter?

My 3 year EDF contract is coming to an end and I'm thinking of going to the Octopus tracker tariff. Do I get EDF to fit a smart meter before the contract ends or best to let Octopus fit it?
Do you have normal meters just now, or original SMETS1 smart meters? If the latter, you'll find Octopus reluctant to replace them with newer SMETS2 smart meters if they submitting meter reads, but you can gently force their hand if you get the right advisor on the phone.

Good luck getting EDF to fit it. Not that it should be an issue, but it could take some time, to not only fit to but then be up and running. Why don't you just leave that to Octopus..?
Maybe I'm wrong but once you flip to Octopus you will get another IHD anyway.

I wouldn't be betting octopus to be any better either tbh. Though their customer service is better than edf

My smart gas meter has run out of battery so it needs to be completely replaced as Ovo won’t just replace the battery. Seems very wasteful these things have such a short lifespan.

The EDMI one we had, gas meter, had a battery that could not be replaced. They changed our meter with a Landis GYR+ type that has a battery cover.
IIRC the battery in the EDMI one was supposed to be rated for 15y.

Octopus wants to upgrade my SMETS1 meter to SMETS2. It's working fine, so unless there's a good reason for needing to change (like, "it won't work after X because Y") then I'm a bit reluctant to do it.

I've also had my DNO over to look at 'delooping' my suppy (it comes in to my house and goes straight through to next door), but with everything stable and working now (I was having issues with my car charger), I'm reluctant to fiddle!

Id change it if it enables you access to smart tarrifs via octopus. If not then there's no need, uness they say there is? I'd get rid of the loop too if I could. If only for tidyness.

Get it changed, S1 meters will stop functioning as smart in th next 18-24months as network providers start 2/3g shut down

Oh and 100% get shot of the looped supply, as the offer of free supply unlooping is to end in 2027

SMETS1 is a 3G meter, so when your country shuts down the old 3G network, your meter's smart function will stop working

And yes getting rid of 3G is a very good thing, it's a very unsecure network

I Like octopus.
They sent me a little pink box. (for free)
Connected it to WiFi.
Now I see live useage, 5 min usage and 30min usage.
All on my phone.

Its kind of useful info, but to make it much more useful it needs to be matched with pricing, so you can work out the cost. I assume the app does the price thing as well

It does. But its hit or miss. Some days it takes a few hours or even days to figure out the £

I have an EV though, and 95% of the time it puts my EV charging on the off peak. Sometimes it doesn't, albeit rarely.

Either way, my avg £ per kWh was £0.12 last month.

Somebody I know is with Octopus and also has SMETS1 meters. When they reached out to Octopus to replace the meters with SMETS2 about 2 years ago, they refused. After reading your post and the replies to it, I've told them to reach out to Octopus again and ask for the meters to be upgraded. It'll be interesting to see their response.

Not surprised given they worked and it was 2 years ago and the existing meter had at least 4 years to run at that point and they are desperately trying to get people off the old radio eco 7 meters at the moment.
