Mooching... in your house
I'm trying to help my father-in-law out with an excel issue, a lot of the time he needs to copy formulas from one spreadsheet to another (entirely separate file) - in Excel 2003 he simply does a copy and paste and it all works fine, but in 2010 it either pastes the result as text, or a link to the original file...

Surely if the old one can do it, the new one can? how do we copy the true cell content using Excel 2010... anyone know?

If you click the wee chevron beneath the paste icon at the top left of the screen you're given options as to what you want to paste eg. Values, Formulas, Links etc.

When you type something into a Cell, you will see the Text box just above the spreadsheet? Copy and Paste it from there, otherwise Excel thinks you want to Copy that exact Cell instead of its Contents.

Excel cannot and has never afaik been able to copy between Excel instances. In 2007 & 2010, opening multiple files opens separate instances of the program whereas default behaviour in 2003 was to open the same instance.

He needs to open Excel, then open all files in that instance. Formulae copied between files should now work.
