I want unlock my iPhone from the 02 network. I rang them up and they said £15 + up to 10days.

I kind of want it unlocked today. I believe that it is possible to do this yourself with a jail broken phone. Is this correct? If so I could do with some pointers.

The phone is a 3GS.
It was bought in 2010

Version 5.1.1 (9b206)
Model mc131B
Serial no: 839399***
Modem firmware 05.16.05

Giff gaff pointed me in the direction of redsnow. I was a little bit concerned to read something about it bricking 3GS. I read that if you phone is manufactured week 34 or later in 2011, then you have an issue. I believe mine is from 2010, so shouldnt be a problem. However it also stated that if digits 3-5 are 134 or later then you should not install 06.15 baseband? Mine is 939 so that appears later, and explanation would be appreciated.

I also came across the greenpoison absinthe, is this better/worse?

As you can probably tell I have no idea what I am doing so any help would be much appreciated!

What is special about evasion vs redsnow or absinthe?

In answer to earlier questions, I am no longer 02 pay monthly. I switched to Giff gaff when contract expired, but also have a pay as you go sim.

I only want to unlock so that I can put i can test a few alternative network providers (e.g 3 and orange) before I sign up for a new phone. Hence I do not really want to pay £15 to O2 for the unlock, when the phone is only going to be used for a couple more weeks.

I mainly want to unlock the phone so I can test the signal with a couple of alternative networks. The other way I could do this would be with a mobile broadband dongle. I have one from 02, anyone know if the dongle will be "locked" to 02?

though I;m not sure if 3g data coverage correlates to normal GSM/voice call coverage.

I got the iphone unlatched today. requested the unlatch via onlien chat in the morning, and got the unl;atch confirmation a few minutes ago. You just need a non-o2 network sim, insert it and then connect the device to itunes. The unlatching takes place via itunes.

Thanks for this post, you inspired me to try again with O2. I rang them up and said I was not happy to pay the £15, and they have unlocked me for free. Huzzah.
