I'm looking into developing a Facebook app to help gather stats for my dissertation. Anyone familiar with the Facebook API?

I build an .Net app using VS 2005, C# and the Facebook API.

Become a Facebook Developer on the site.
Get your keys. Set up your app on Facebook.
The calls backwards and forwards and authentication are easy enough to understand.
The funniest thing is knowing when people agree to use your app, how much personal data you can harvest from them.

PC Pro magazine had an article they were running recently on developing Facebook sites.

This is my main concern at the moment. Ideally I need access to their Facebook browsing habits, so how many profiles the read, how many wall posts etc.

I'd be very surprised if that kind of information was available. About a year ago I looked at the API to see what personal data apps could see and there were no features for extracting browsing habits. You can pull out things like wall post counts but no idea if there is associated recipient details.

Think about the outcry if FB made available browsing histories! Bob likes to view pics of Dave's girlfriend. Bob and Dave are best friends..

I'd love to know who was looking at who and how often though I suspect it could ruin a fair few friendships!

I didn't think this would be possible, but that's kinda the point of this thread; to see if it's worth me putting in the effort to find out :)

i thought that wasn't allowed

the only app that looks like it is one that shows your profile picture on someone elses profile - doesn't log who's looked at it, just looks like it's logged you've looked

There is a "whos looked at your profile" type app....
One of my friends installed that app or a similar one a while back and invited me to join.

When I read the details the devoloper stated it was just for fun and all it does is pick random names from the user's friend list.

yeah cos otherwise it'd be a breach of privacy! none of the apps can do such things :)
