What happened to Open Office?

Google it.

Short version is developers didn't agree with the rights restrictions imposed so they left. First build of libra was the oo code (which hadn't been updated in ages) with bits fixed but it's being constantly improved in the way oo hasn't in years.

The spreadsheet app in open office has pretty much everything Excel does. Might be a bit strange at first if you have used Excel a lot but once you get used to where things are and the slightly different syntax then it's every bit as powerful (plus you get to tell M$ to foxtrot oscar :)

It's not half as powerful as you don't have VBscripting, nor do you have the plug in support.
 
Given the OP my assumption (possibly incorrectly) was that he wouldn't be looking for the likes of VBScripting but I could be wrong :)
