I just installed this today, what would you recommend I do first? Including what settings to change, path to follow in game and add-ons to look at?

IMO, FS2004 varies for what you want out of it. I personnaly enjoy my flying for a Virtual Airline. Seems to make more of a point of doing it and also am hoping to eventually get a PPL, so am using it as a very valuable learning experience.
I hope you have yourself a decent joystick so as top appreciate the sim fully. Forcefeedback is not essential but a desirable as yuocan feel how the plane is flying more accuratley and respond accordingly.
