I have been playing loads of this recently and am really enjoying it. I know there are other tales games, but from what i have read the combat system in the older games isn't as good?

Is this game anything like any of the Final Fantasy games? Or any other Japanese games with interesting combat, good story and a nice looking world to explore that are worth looking into?

TIA

Star Ocean: The Last Hope has similar combat, people find the game a bit marmite but I personally thought it was a blast.

The earlier Tales games are mostly good, Graces F has really good combat. Vesperia probably has the best story, the combat is still enjoyable but weaker than Graces and Beseria I'd say.

Resonance of Fate has a fun combat system, although a lot of people find it quite punishing.

The modern Final Fantasy games have awful combat in my opinion, in fact I'd go a step further and say there hasn't been a good Final Fantasy since 10.

Tales of Vesperia is amazing; it's combat system isn't *too* different but where Berseria has free-roam style combat as "always on", Vesperia is only when moving around the combat area and then you "lock in" to a 2D style movement. It's hard to explain, but it plays really well for an 11 year old game, looks amazing still with it's anime/cell-shaded graphics, and in my opinion is probably the best Tales game ever made. I would stay clear of newer Final Fantasy games which pains me to say as I love Final Fantasy, but FF15 for instance is just one giant cliche and cringey, and the combat system I found to be too clunky. Other than the ones mentioned by Gray2233, you might want to also check out Ni No Kuni 2 which is available on Steam.

Thanks, I'll check the games mentioned out. Tales of Vesperia sounds good and i'll definitely give that a go.

Its a shame to hear the FF games are no good, I was hoping I might have a load of games to work through. If the older games are still worthwhile then I might give them a try. Also this doesn't give me much hope for the FF7 remake, which i was hoping would be good as I never played the original and always thought it looked interesting.

FF4-9 are still very playable and very enjoyable games if you can get past the visual aspects of some of them, but they are turn based games which doesn't seem to be what you're looking for.

Most of the Tales games are worth playing regardless, as are the Star Ocean titles par perhaps the most recent. Star Ocean: The Last Hope is some of the most fun I've had with a JRPG's combat, the story is so-so and I'd recommend playing it with the Japanese voice overs + subs as the English dub is atrociously poor in some respects, but the gameplay alone would have kept me playing. There's even an extensive arena zone you can participate in with a ton of different options to work through, although that's true of all of the Star Ocean games.

If you decide to play the earlier (I'd say Star Ocean 2 is the best overall) games in the series I'd recommend grabbing a copy of the PSP remaster and playing it via PPSSPP for the best experience.

Just a quick bump to ask you guys your opinion on Tales of Zestiria? It's currently on offer for £9.99 on Steam.

After playing some more of Tales of Berseria, I think its a combination of the art style, music, characters and story that has drawn me in. The combat being pretty fun also helps as well. So i think even if a games combat is weaker I wouldn't mind too much as long as the story/characters are good.

I also like the little moments of comedy in the skits in Berseria. Actually laughed out loud a few times. The game is just really good to chill out and play after a hard days work. I kinda don't want to complete it. Then again, I guess I can always play through again and try out different characters more as I have been sticking with Velvet so far.

I wish there were more unique weapons and armour, like in Dark Souls for example. It would improve the game even further if you could find cool weapons or get them for boss rewards etc. Instead of generic amber etc weapons and armour.

If the main thing you're enjoying from Beseria are the skits and characterisation, you'll probably enjoy most of the modern Tales games including Zesteria.

In that regard, I would say that Symphonia and Vesperia are better, and Symphonia can be had for not a lot of cash even outside of sales periods.

Really recommend Dragon Quest XI if you like Tales of Bersia. DQ XI is a pretty amazing game and one of my all time favourites.

Ni No Kuni 2 someone mentioned above is also great, but not quiet up thier for me like DQ XI and tales.

Great I'll have a look into Dragon Quest XI, thanks.

The LoH games are fantastic, but they're turn based and generally much slower paced compared to the Tales series.

I am a big fan of xcom enemy unknown and also Valkyrie Chronicles, so if the turn based combat is anything like that it'll be fine by me.

I actually had a lot of these games on my ignore list on Steam as it must have been at a time when I was very ignorant toward anything anime. But I recently watched my first anime (demon Slayer) and am kicking myself for not giving it a chance sooner as it's nothing like I had in my mind.

Yeah.

If you have a Playstation it's worth checking the PSN store for the likes of Tales of Graces F. I'd also highly recommend looking up Suikoden 2, absolutely outstanding game and one of the greatest JRPG's ever made.

I have a PS3, so if its available for that I'll check them out. I don't play on console much at all these days, so would always prefer to buy on PC if possible.
