I’m staying in a static caravan and this is the state of the boiler which has got me a little concerned… am I right to be?

It has a certificate which shows it passed all the checks just a couple of months ago and was signed off by someone who quoted their registration number.

Just because it looks a bit old and knackered, doesn’t mean it isn’t safe.

If they are soot deposits rather than paint scorch marks then yes I would be concerned. If it's soot then it's not burning the gas fully so could be generating carbon monoxide. If soot, I would not be leaving that on over night or if at risk of falling asleep.

I'm not a gas engineer, but also take a look at the flame, it should be burning fully blue. If there's orange in it then it's incomplete combustion and a risk of carbon monoxide.

I would err on the side of caution.

I’m back home now and still alive but I did get really paranoid about carbon monoxide, I just made sure all the windows were open.

There was a fire angel alarm which I think detected carbon monoxide, but it was at the other end of the van nowhere near the boiler or where we slept

Buy your own CO alarm from the local supermarket/tool retailer?

CO alarms should be near where you sleep too as well as near the boiler.

Bottled Gas and mains gas have slightly different burn profiles. The sooting is most likely from the wind blowing through the Van causing the burner pilot light (Edit as notices its an on demand burner)to change its burn profile and create soot.

FYI Caravan/mobile home Gas boilers have a different set of standards to that of your home.

Source, I'm an Ex Gas Mains Engineer.
