Any good free multiplayer PC games?

What kind of types / genres are you into? Would certainly help narrow down the field as there are literally hundreds of thousands of free to play games out there...

www.quakelive.com (quake 3 in your web browser)

www.xonotic.org (fast pace multi mode fps akin to unreal tournament)

www.tribesnext.com (open source remake of tribes 2)

www.warsow.net (popular quake mod)

www.urbanterror.info (game like counter strike)

www.sauerbraten.org (open source fps, quite obscure)

www.warthunder.com (in beta its a ww2 flight game)

http://www.splashdamage.com/content/wolfenstein-enemy-territory-barracks (ww2 fps that is a classic)

planetside 2, tribes ascend, blacklight retribution on steam.

Literally anything as long as it's easy to pick up and play.

And thanks Eames, will check some of them out.

Mechwarrior online is pretty badass and rewards team play. The trial mechs are pretty pants, but they're good enough to have fun with.

I was about to suggest that :)

I've been having great fun with some friends playing it, it is massively better with a group of 4-8 who know each other and have voice comms :)

It also avoids the grindyness of World of Tanks, whilst still rewarding you for paying for bits.
IE you don't have to pay anything to be good at it (the best mechs aren't pay to use*), but paying for say mechbays lets you be more versatile.

*Indeed from what one of my friends has said having bought a couple, they aren't necessarily as good as the ones you buy with earned credits.

I'm enjoying War thunder a lot more than world of tanks/warplanes, like others have said it feels way to much of a grind to be fun.

Could try good o' quake live

I played planetside 2, pretty good but for me it felt like it took too long to achieve anything, but maybe that was just my time constraints while playing, I only played it in 1-2 bursts,

Neverwinter, although I haven't tried it, looks like an acctually ok f2p mmo.

Marvel heroes is coming out soon, i'm not sure exactly what it is but I've heard that it got the creator of the diablo games on the development team so i'll be keeping my eyes out for that.

You can easily grab a copy of dota 2, it is a moba so it up to your personal taste really.

I would play tribes ascend more often, if it didn't give me a stupid error when I try to launch it :(
(the error I get it "tribes ascend is validating" when i launch the game, ive reinstalled it, verified integrity of game cashe, but nothing works, does anyone know how to fix this?)

...and TF2, just try not to get addicted to the whole hat system :p
