Any good freeware compilers?

Maybe so, but they both have compilers with then don't they? I prefer coding in Visual Studio or another IDE rather than just Notepad. No point in two programs when you can do it with one.

DevC++ uses the GCC compiler, so you're still using two programs.
 
+1 for visual studio express. Micrososft get a lot of stick but the help systems on their products and the info available on the net are superb imo, especially when your're learning.
