Opened the MBA up and there was a folder flashing on boot. It appears, somehow, that the OSX partition or disk was wiped.

Thing is, this is Flash storage so it's not like I can remove the drive and scan it.

There seems very little in the way of preboot recovery software for OSX, it all seems to want to run from within OSX, which doesn't work at the moment.

Anything else I can try?

It sounds like the boot drive has died.

Burn a copy of the latest OS to a USB (see this) and follow the steps below

  1. Turn on your Mac by pressing the power button by choosing Restart in the Apple menu, or restart it if it's already on.
  2. Press and hold the Option (⌥) key immediately upon hearing the startup chime. Release the key after Startup Manager appears

FYI you can still press the option key on boot without a USB, so that may be a way to verify if the machine isn't dead.

So, I wasn't overly precious about the content. All pictures and things are in iCloud. So I used the internet repair option and the OSX is back on, albeit bereft of any of my data.

Ho hum.....
