Any good recommendations for a tower cooler thats shorter than 160mm?

Just got an InWin 101c and its an amazing case, i have a CoolerMaster 212 and it's listed as 158mm but is almost touching the glass. Im just thinking of futureproof clocking as ill replace it with something better when i move on from my 6600k.

Whats better than the 212 but shorter? :)

I don't have your case but I have never heard of a problem as long as cooler height specification is same or less than case CPU clearance specification.
Matterhorn Pure is about 4-5c better cooling than 212. At lower speeds Matterhorn is quieter but at full speed it is a little louder. Thing is with more cooling ability it's fan does not need to run as fast to match 212 temps so will be even quieter.

Megalahelms and Basic 81 (economy version of Megalahelms) cooler better, but Megalahelms is higher priced. If you can find Basic 81 it's is basically same as Megahaelms for less money.

The InWin spec on the case says a cooler no more than 160mm, i can believe it as my 212 is a hairs width away from the glass. Im obsessed with a quiet system so like large coolers with slow rpm fans but they just seems to be getting taller so choice is getting smaller as it were. I'd go for an AIO but i hear many stories of pump noise and fans being loud so i tend to steer away from them.

Macho 120 would be very good for that with big loosely spaced fins.
Despite of size it doesn't block any DIMM slots (of dual channell mobos) because of fin stack/heatsink being offset from base:

By using some airflow guide from case rear fan would likely work nicely without own fan.
Especially if you have non-reference cooler graphics card that could lower PSU's heat load:
InWin had major brain fart in putting PSU to obsolete dozen years ago warmest place in case.
PSU's position in top was simply designed in time when whole PC produced less heat than modern high end CPU

Thermalright is actually one of the older heatsinks makers and one of the first to truly embrace heatpipes 15 years ago.
Such shame they aren't anymore fashionable brand because they still make very good heatsinks at good prices.
And you even get long shaft magnetic tip screwdriver with Macho 120.

Cryorig uses weird attaching system with screws coming from back side of motherboard.

So its installation would be trickier with need to keep motherboard and heatsink positioned while turning screws from rear of motherboard.
(that upstair's guy did bad design job with human having only two hands)

I have to say though EsaT that in this InWin case my temps are brilliant, better than other cases ive had, i would have thought the psu at the top is a no no but it works great.

I am really liking the look of the Macho 120 and Cryorig, i'd never considered them so thanks for the suggestions :)

Scythe makes some good coolers under 160mm Ninja 4, Mugen 4 and Mugen 5, but not Mugen Max. They cool well and quietly too.

Indeed, and front fan will clear tall RAM too. Back of fins are notch to clear RAM up to about 59mm tall, fin notch is 55mm above CPU.

I managed to fit a 212X into my Corsair 100R Silent case. Theeennn I went all out and managed to fit this massive Noctua NH-D14 into it. I have customised the case by removing the drive bays, swapping to a windowed side and making the front vented. Kept the large center fan, but couldn't use the front fan. So I doubled up on 2x 120mm exhaust fans. It's all very very tight. The side of the window, juuust touches the top of the cooler. My setup won't win any looks contests but it's exactly what I want due to where I have my case, hence why I needed to keep it all in a midi case.

Edit: The D14 is 160mm in height. The newer D15 is 5mm taller in height due to where the center fan sits, if I remember correctly. Which means the D15 won't fit with any fans mounted.

My 3770k is @ 4.4Ghz with 1.164v. Max temp after an hour of Prime95 69*c.

Here are some pics...(Excuse the dust, pics were prior to a clean)

Thats a nice system Geezer, you have exactly the problem i have with the tips of the heat pipes being right up against the glass. Cant be doing with that as i dont want scratched glass and any vibration involved, i'm really OCD when it comes to system noise as it sits on my desk next to me.

If components don't produce much heat then PSU being on top isn't big deal.
But if it's doing most of work of exhausting heat from case then PSU's fan has to be noisier or PSU will run hotter.
And higher temperature will always shorten PSU's operating life.
Might not have current warranty lengths of PSUs if all cases had PSU on top.

While Cryorig avoids needing to mess with screws below/immediately next to heatsink fins, need to access bottom of motherboards for attaching heatsink isn't exactly fun sounding.
Likely myself going to get that Macho 120 SBM next time when updating PC assuming it's available.
Like I said unfortunately Thermalright seems somewhat out of fashion despite of excellent products at good prices.
Macho serie is continuation of HR-serie which was one of SilentPCreview's favorites for passive cooling.
Good chances that also Thermalright's fan is better than Noctua's vibrating rollers...

PSU up top is still exhausting out the back of case an depending on which way it's mounted drawing air from above case or from inside of case.

All the bigger quality coolers I've used (that's a lot of coolers because I test/review them) have mounting plates that install on back of motherboard unless it's a LGA 2011x system or new TR4

Macho 120 SBM uses a back mounting plate for most installations too.

Thanks! I would say it's a few mm off the glass tbh, so no vibration for me, it is veeery tight though. However I see where you are coming from! Not a cheap cooler to buy and it don't fit either tbh. If you want lower temps, maybe keep the 212 and delid?

Wouldnt trust myself with a delid mate, i could do it but knowing my luck the thing would just die and im out of warranty. The 212 on my 6600k works a treat but im just thinking ahead for a new cooler when Ryzen refresh comes or jumping on a 6/8 core Intel :)
