any good space games ?

Freespace 2 even though fairly old (2000ish) is still the best combat space sim out there and still looks great and supports higher resolutions and textures with a community mod, picked it up again from Good Old Games over the holidays.

If your looking for an open world space sim, with trade, exploration, reputations etc, X3 terran conflict is as close as you can get to a modern Elite. Its a bit hard to get into but will drain your time away once you've got a handle on it.

I really liked freespace 2 and I played it for the first time a few months back lol. Got it from gog.com stupidly cheap and it works fine on the latest hardware/OS

X3 is very hard to get into, I've found anyway. Extremely steep learning curve to the game!

If you like RTS space games, give haegemonia a go as if you get that working the space battles are immense (REALLY good explosions :P)

X3 TC is fantastic, so much depth to the game. It is however a little difficult to get used to it if you have not played the x games before, but its worth it.

Nothing better than Freespace 2 or Freelancer. Freelancer is very 'arcadey' where as games like X3 are very, very, very, slow. I prefer hectic combat rather than click the enemy and occasionaslly fire. I like the combat in Elite where you feel you can actually shoot them yourself!

Just to re-iterate:

Freelancer & Freespace 2 you can pick them both up for less than £10.

+1 for TC, it is the closest to the old Elite. It has plenty of dogfighting with about 30 gun types, plenty of missiles, mines etc. You can capture other ships and board the larger frigates/destroyers/carriers. Well worth getting into and if you are stuck the forum is extremely helpful.

+1 for X3 Terran Conflict. Learning curve is vertical but easier than previous versions of X3.

I read somewhere that Elite 4 is a 'go' now and although the brand-name itself will ensure sales, I think Mr Braben and his team will struggle to match current space flight sims as the gendre has come a long way since Elite was around. I almost don't want it to happen, I'd prefer to remember Elite as it was ..at that time.

X3 hasn't come a long way with it's silly Cahoonas bakeries and lattice like collection of shoeboxes that make up it's 'universe'. The game contionually goes out of it's way to remind you that it is a game.

I'm sure Braben can do better...small developers like Starwraith have IMO.

X3 ... The best space combat/trading game since Elite, has tons of depth and quality. Be prepared to spend a lot of time working the game out as it's got a really steep learning curve but it's ultimately rewarding.
