Years ago i used to love xwing. Is there anything modern out there that i might like? My joystick is gathering dust! :)

There's not really much in the way of modern space sims, but Conflict: Freespace and Freespace 2 were the daddies back in the day and they're still brilliant. I think Freespace 2 is free now.

Freelancer was very fun. It's not so much of a sim, and you wouldn't need your joystick, but it's pretty light hearted and the story is quite immersive. Ship upgrades make for interesting replay-ability but the search and destroy missions do get a bit repetitive. Try playing it on hard - the final battle is next to impossible.

As above really

Freespace 2
Freespace
Starlancer
Freelancer

...in that order (IMO).

There is also the free allegiance but I'm not sure how popular that is now.

no room at the inn for Independance War 2 Edge of Chaos ? bit of a shock that....

would class it above Freespace...

The 1st I-war could be worth digging out, bit graphically clunky these days but very involving and great fun. Good bit of micro-management too if you want it.

Quick, get a few LDS missiles after that dreadnaught before it escapes! Shift power to the PBC's! Track the shields to those targets! Do a barrel roll!
