Hi, was trying to fit a friends kitchen light other day. It was one of those rail jobbies, ie 4 bulbs on a rail. The existing light fitting is a single bulb, i removed the bulb and was faced with quite a lot of wires, which i've now found out is called a "rose" as per below. Now i've identified the 2 switch wires in the ceiling.

The new light fitting comes with a terminal block ready attached with Live, Neutral and Earth attachments, as well as a 4th spare terminal block. I cant remember the exact wording of the instructions but it does mention something about "roses" and using the 4th block to terminate?

But how would i go about wiring this in exactly? A friend has suggested i could bodge it by simply leaving everything attached as above but jsut removing the plastics that the metal terminal blocks are house in, insulating them with tape and using the Brown and blue wires as pictured above and just put them into the corresponding terminal points in the new fittings. I don't want to bodge it though and would rather do it properly, any ideas guys?

If you notice the rose has 4 terminals, and the new light comes with 4 terminal blocks ....

the above is mearly a comment, you should not act upon it, setting fire to your friends house and having his entire family burn to death in their beds is your problem.

I would suggest you post it on a proper DIY forum where pros hang out, such as diynot.com.

You're right not to bodge it and risk popping off the next poor so and so to look at it imo.

Remove the terminal block and wire using the rose.

this.

the new light only needs a live, neutral and earth. you have all them already. all you are doing is disconneting the existing lighting wire and fitting the new one. easy peasy

If that diagram does not make it clear for you then I suggest you do not attempt this.

Unfortunately there physically isnt enough room to keep the rose/fitting in place as the new bracket for the new fitting will not fit, the rose gets in the way. I'm pretty sure i know what to do, but ive posted on the diynot forums for clarification. Thanks for everyones help! (well most of you!)

so you're removing the rose, and transfering the wiring into the new fitting? Just wire it up exactly how it already is, and it'll be fine. Working methodically it really is very simple :)
