Hi all,

I'm looking at a new PSU as I want one that can cope with xfire later in the year. It's tricky as I only have the room for a standard length 160-165mm one. So far the 2 that I have whittled it down to are.

Fractal Designs Newton R2 1000w - Seems like a good PSU with a few good reviews and 5 year warranty. Not a well known brand though so maybe a little bit of a gamble. Probably the favorite at the moment.

or

Silverstone Strider Plus 1000w - 100% modular, which is nice, and a well know brand (obviously I know how good their cases are), efficient too. One review suggest slight ripple, but I can't see that being too much of an issue, and only 3 year warranty.

Someone has also suggested a Coolermaster 1000w one that is a good price too. Sadly it has an extra CPU power cable, for dual CPU boards, that isn't modular and I don't want to have to find somewhere to tie that up inside my case.

So does anyone here have a Fractal Designs PSU, if so I'd like to hear what your experience has been with them so far? Also, if anyone has any suggestions for other models or comments on the Silverstone, I'd be keen to hear those too.

Thanks :)

I don't have any experience with Fractal Design PSUs but between the ones you mentioned I'd say to go for the CM one.5 year warranty 80+ Bronze and flat modular cables which are very nice when it comes to cable management.I have a CM psu in my main rig(600W version) and I can tell that its very silent and very stable voltage supply.

Buy the best out of these top makes.

Corsair
Antec
Bequiet
Seasonic
Enermax

Buy one in your budget, preferably modular.

The Fractal PSU's are great, no issues at all with them, they perform very well, rivals Corsair and Antec any day.

Sadly, I just can't get the CM one. That extra cable that I won't use and isn't modular is a problem for me

I have an Enermax at the moment and in an ideal world I would get another, or one of the other brands that you have mentioned. Unfortunately, none of them make a PSU over 800W that isn't longer than 160-165mm.

That's good to hear, although maybe you would say that as OcUK sell them! :p The reviews that I have found suggest that they're good but it's a little known brand and it's hard to find user reviews. There's also been some suggestion of the build quality being slightly lower than some other brands?

Hi the newton ones are made by newton unlike a lot that are badge engineered!
Newton are part of delta which also make a lot of the antec ones.
If you click google on make it will take you to some reveiws of it.ive similare one in my alienware pc and guy's have said quite well made when looked inside stable well spec'd.
you get sim to CM. 80+ 5years etc.they sell them on OC.co.uk

About the CM PSU the extra cpu cable isnt a problem because it is attatched to the other cable so theres only a plug floating by the socket which wont get in the way.

I/We don't give bad advise on the forums, if we did then the trust that the purchasing team at Overclockers would quickly be lost. This would not be good for anyone really.

Yeah, I know mate. I was just being facecious. ;)

I'll be ordering one, with an i7 bundle, tomorrow. I'll post a little review when I get it running.
