I was going to put this in the sports arena section but it's full of footy chat so it would seem a tad out of place :)

Just curious if anyone here is a member of one of these subscription gyms (LA Fitness, banatynes etc). I'm tempted to join one to get me out of the house more often as I find it difficult to work out at home at the moment, too many distractions etc.

I'm not the fittest person in the world though and I'm fairly self concious at the best of times so I'm not entirely sure how I'd fit in with these places especially going on my own (no way in hell I'd get a mate to go with me).

Should I forget it and head down the pub instead?

Gyms will let you go down and have a look at the facilities before you sign up. Go down and have a look at it and try and gauge how the staff are etc.

You should be made to feel welcome and not intimidated at all. You will be surprised at the different types of people that go to the gyms from grannies to athletes. 99% of them are there for one thing only- to train. They couldn't care less about what other people are doing. Keep that in mind when you are working out and you will feel a lot less conscious. Granted you do get the odd bloke who sneers at you for using a lower weight than him or the overly competitive person who will speed up their treadmill faster than yours if they are next to you but if you focus on your goals it shouldn't bother you one bit.

Gyms also run classes so you end up making gym buddies if you decide to go to the class who become training partners and even friends outside the gym.

I say give it a go, see if they will do a two week free trial or some other offer for you. If after the two weeks you hate it, hit the pub :D

I've been a member of a gym for a couple of months now, never done any excersise for a very long time. They set me up with some gentle cardio stuff and I just go and do it, everyone is doing their own thing and people pretty much keep to themselves.

The changing room was odd, some people very careful with towels etc to people parading about starkers! I suppose it takes all sorts!

Definitely check out what facilities are on offer for the price (squash/tennis courts, sauna steam room pool) as they are more motivation to go in my opinion :)

Most of them do a free fitness test with one of the Personal Trainers - I would take advantage of this! As after the initial session they obviously try to sell you PT sessions.

Ignore everyone when you go to the gym, I see working out as 'me' time, gives me time to think about stuff and listen to my mp3 player - that is all.

Yes - I was not impressed by the idiot who started asking me questions about work in my lunch hour in the gym!

As said they usually let you have a look around if you want to first so that you can see what they have. I've been going 2/3 times a week for around 8 or 9 months now and I love it there, the gym I go to has a really friendly atmosphere which makes me want to be there a little more.

Yer go around and tour the gyms, look at the facilities and see what your getting for your money, age of machinary, see how busy it is at peak times aswell thats quite important.
