Hi guys, I've just put together the rig that I posted on here a couple of weeks ago and can't get the damn thing to start, so I thought I'd see what you all thought, since I'm not that experienced with new builds.

Basically the machine doesn't start up properly. The power turns on, various lights come on, the fans for the motherboard/case/gpu/cpu start, however, it doesn't beep. Nothing comes up on the screen and it just sits there, doing nothing. It's quite depressing really.

The machine is:

CPU: Intel Core i7-2600K 3.40GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155
GPU: 1536MB MSI V801, GTX 480
Mobo: Asus P8P67 Intel P67 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard - (Sandybridge)
RAM: G.Skill RipJawX 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit
HDD: 128GB SSD Crucial RealSSD Solid State Drive
PSU: 620w Corsair
Case: Antec 100 One Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case

Any help is really appreciated! :(

Check all psu connections are in including the 8 pin for cpu power.

Tried doing a CMOS reset and also check the ram is in the correct slots, did this on my i7 build.

If you have all the bits connected and they all work your PC will start.

Do you have your keyboard and mouse connected?
Is you graphic card connected to the monitor.
Have you put your CPU fan connector on the right fan header.
Is your monitor set to auto or the correct input. My monitor needs me to set HDMI or DVi or DSUB

And if all those things do not work. Take your system apart again and start over.

Has it ever booted since you assembled it? Is this a new fault?

I had same symptoms when I built my 2500k rig. In addition, the CPU warning led on the motherboard stayed lit.

I hadn't plugged in the 2 * 4 pin power connectors from the psu to the motherboard. The cpu wasn't getting any power. The motherboard was diagnosing the problem correctly.

Like mentioned, here is the connector in question. Have you got anything plugged into this?

In response the above:

Yes - keyboard/mouse plugged in/monitor set to correct input/cpu fan is working so is on the correct header I think.

I have two power cables coming from PSU to mobo (24 pin atx and 8 pin atx). The 'standby power LED' stays on (even when I try and start up) so I imagine the power to the mobo is ok.

I'll try and do a CMOS reset. I've checked the ram is in the correct slots also.

Isn't there always a beep? Is the lack of beep significant?

Start with the basics - check the 8pin and 24pin power connectors are plugged in properly (some PSUs have 2x 4pin and 20+4 pin connectors, so check all of the pins are connected and seated properly).

If it still doesn't boot, check your memory is in the right slots and is seated properly.

If none of that helps, I'd strongly suggest stripping it down and starting over - take it slow and make sure each component's seated before moving onto the next one (it's easy to miss things if you rush it)

Also double check your CPU fan connection. Some mobos won't boot if the fan's connected to the wrong header (check the manual for the headers). The fan will work on the wrong header, but the mobo won't see a CPU fan.

Checked that CPU fan installed properly and it is. Still haven't sorted this but will take it all apart tomorrow and start again and let you know how it goes.

Does anyone know whether a GTX 480/similar card needs to be plugged into the PSU directly? I'm currently using a similar power cable from an old graphics card as the one supplied is duff (pins are bent), which I thought may be the issue, but the manual is ambiguous as to whether the power cable to the psu is actually needed =/

Thanks for all the replies.

The 480 would need both 8 pin & 6 pin connected, but can be done with molex to PCI-E adapters.

I've cracked it. It was the GPU power supply. I assumed that the power plug was for some kind of dual graphics mode, for some reason. I've got it working with a makeshift power cable config that uses most of the pins.

Thanks once again, will post some pics when it's all installed/totally sorted.

Glad to see you have got it sorted!

I have lost count fo the amount of times I have forgot to put in the PCI-E connectors into my graphics card, panic, and then look at my case only to realise my mistake. It's easily done!

I looked at the manual/quick start stuff that came with the card and it was totally useless and just said about inserting the card into the mobo. I googled the power supply sockets and nothing seemed to suggest they were essential (I for some reason thought the mobo would power the card and it wouldn't need a direct supply). Online I Just found bits on optional sli/crossfire sockets which I took the power sockets as relating to.

The PCI express slot can provide some power (75W IIRC), which is why low end / older GPUs don't need the extra cables. The PCI express 2.0 slots are designed for a nominal 300W card with the additional power provided by 6/8 pin PCIe power connectors.

I've got it working with a makeshift power cable config that uses most of the pins.
:confused::eek: doesn't sound good :p

Your PSU must have a pci-e connector on it, they are usually labelled as such, please don't use a make do connector that just fits, whatever that one may be. Have I misread your post? Your not using the pci-e power connector. You also get moles to pci-e.

U use that make shift cable at your peril u trying to take your new rig to Rma heaven

Use proper supply cables to your graphics card as those molex jobs are not very well built in fact molex connections should be banned, I have lost count the amount of pcs I have had to repair due to these melting or shorting bad design and worse build
