I used to get this when I had to manually shut down my old PC by holding in the button.

It is a setting called Check Hard disk for errors or something. Disable it as it may be set for a scan every 2 days. Right click hard disk. Oh it is called, Hard disk indexing, that's it.

It's chkdsk, I would scan your HDD for errors with HDtune.

just let it run mate, makes sure your hard drive is running as it should

after it has ran it wont come up again for a few weeks

If this is repeated (and you've let it run) you may have something that is corrupting the disc. This could be a virus or windows problem, or even HDD failure starting.

If it persists i'd run a diagnostic on your HDD and failing that reinstall windows if you haven't for a while, it benefits from it every 6 months or so.

wont reinstalling mean i lose everything though? Ran Hd tune came back fine

people are making a mountain out of a mole hill, just let it run and you wont loos anyhting, you wont see it for a good while and everthing will be dandy

Well there's usually a reason why it comes up in the first place. If it's just an improper shutdown it shouldn't happen again once it's run through, though i've had several machines with problems do this in the past, half the time it was a windows bug, with the OS not recording the flag that it was shut down properly, for various reasons.
