I had my iPhone 4 replaced today through an out of warranty repair. The phone was originally bought on an O2 contract on release day 2010. I need to use the phone in India with an India sim in a few weeks time, do people know if it'll work or if I need to get it unlocked. I don't have any mates with a micro sim from another network to try it out.

Thanks guys,

Get a free or very cheap other network sim and cut it down (a cutter is £2ish but its very easy to do it with scissors), or jailbreak and unlock it that way.

Just fill in the unlock request on the O2 website if you bought the original on a contract. I bought my original 3GS as a PAYG but had an ongoing simplicity contract. Whilst neither the phone nor contract were related, I filled in the request and they accepted it. Same with my 4 on vodafone. Phone was a business phone, but I had an old old contract with them (which lapsed about 4 years ago) and just used the details of that and they honoured the request.

If you just want to check, however, just go online and request a free micro sim from a different network, or just go in. No harm in simply going in store and asking to try.
