Any idea what causes this?

I have my resolution on my 22inch widescreen at 1680x1050 and unless i edit the .ini of games to have that resolution on startup, the games start up with squiggly lines (out of sync?) and i have to alt+tab out of the game and then logoff windows and login again to get the monitor back to normal.
Any ideas how i can fix this coz some games i cant edit the .ini and i dont know how else to get them to work.

It seems its just a problem in vista 64 bit, i booted into XP and i dont have the problem.

hmm if it just in vista then i would say it some sort of driver issue

I have tried different drivers, newest ones and older ones...still the same issue.

This sounds very weird, does it happen with all games or just one game?

You can try forcing VSync in all games using the control panel of whichever graphics card manuf. you use, such as nTune I think will do it for Nvidia and CCC for ATI/AMD.

I cant actually change desktop resolutions either it seems.
I rolled back the driver to the MS default driver and i could then change to all resolutions.
I then updated the MS driver via windows update and trhen the problem started again.
This only happens with vista, i dual boot with winxp and i have no problems with it at all.
Any ideas what could be causing this problem?
