Is there anyway i could do away with this part that goes into the motherboard? as it's in the way of my fan i'm adding. i did try it with out, but will only turn on from within the motherboard, and not the case on button ?

Just plug the cables straight into the mainboard, if the power button didn't work you obviously didn't connect the power sw to the right pins! try again..

The only reason mainboard manafacturers supply these is to make it slightly easier to connect the front panel functions to the board, you don't actually need them.

That's the Asus Q-Connect gadget is'nt it? I never used mine on my P5E and just plugged into the board. In your picture can you see the little triangle? That's the positive and needs to go into the + pin on the board.
