So as tech support for the family I've been asked to try and update the inlaws computers.

Sadly they're running virus laden vanilla vista.

I have valid licences, the end goal is to get them onto (legit) versions of Windows 10.

They're also running IE....7.

So - can't upgrade them to Windows 7 because SP2 isn't installed.

Can't install SP2 because SP1 isn't installed...can't install SP1 because IE9 isn't installed, can't install IE9 because SP2 isn't installed....etc etc.

I'm expecting the only solution is backup files > install clean Windows 10 but trying to run the upgrade route first as they have some (archaic) programs that I can't guarantee will run on Windows 10.

Any ideas? I've told them time and time again to get off Vista, long before 10 came on the scene, so will probably leave it as: if they want my help take the risk that some programs wont run and let me format the computer.

Any ideas?

to be honest you have to think if its worth upgrading to 10. You may get away with 7 but is there even drivers for the hardware in them machines for windows 8.1\10?

you cannot upgrade to 10 from vista as it was only free for windows 7 and 8.1 users.

other option is to get a windows 7 key and do a clean install and use the 7 key to activate windows 10

Typo?

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) was released on 4 February 2008.

Windows Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) is a version of the Internet Explorer web browser from Microsoft. It was released to the public on March 14, 2011.
