So basically,

I ran Furmark earlier and the readings had the 6950 I have at 89 degrees which i understand to be safe, how ever after about 4 minutes the computer powered down and then I could smell a slight electrical fire smell, Instantly worried I smelt the back of the computer around the graphics card vent but there was not a hint of electrical smell, then I smelt the PSU and it stunk of it. I am confused how ever that the PSU seems to have died.. I am also wondering if it is safe to test the GPU in a friends computer to see if the GPU is dead or not.

Any advice on this would be great

Thanks!

Why oh why do people use Furmark :(

You can test the GPU in a friends machine - it'll either come on or it won't. I don't see a safety issue there.

I assume your machine doesn't even post anymore?

Good branded PSUs have protection so they wont damage components when they fail.....what PSU were you using?

When you run futuremark or any benchmark tool it stresses the system far more than a game would so the GPU draws even more power from the PSU.

Can you RMA your PSU or do you need us to help you pick a replacement?

Nah it doesn't even get past post, I have an OCZ 750w it was like £80-£90 i think... can't give you the exact model as im out at the moment at a friends but the hard drive is allowing me to take my files of it now from my friends computer so im hopeful that it has not ruined everything. thanks for the responses!

Okay the card is fine the PSU is fried so I am just going to have to buy a new one and hope that nothing else has been hurt by what ever happened. Thanks for the replies!

At least it sounds like it was the PSU only. Good to hear. Could have been worse. Use Heaven or something to test for stability in future if you want to. Furmark isn't a nice program

happened to a friend running a gtx 280. the thing is. his power supply was only 600watts, and his power supply cost him £2 from a car boot sale. And his gpu pulls more power than yours. but yeah. unless your 100% sure of all your system. don't go furmark>!
